Who are Ken & TJ?

i thought the video wall was in a great place. the cocktail area was where a lot of people were stopping to play warlords and such, so it worked out well.

So, are there any people there selling parts, memorabilia, and such, or is it pretty much wall to wall games? Thinking of next year. Whether to drive or fly...

Maybe. Wouldn't be the first time... I drove up to the last year of CGE with a couple other guys from the neogeo forum a couple years ago and stayed at a fellow member's place. Trip was fun as hell. CGE was pretty sad though.

I gotta go at least one time in my lifetime and next year has to be the time ;)

Well, I'd probably want to rent or borrow a truck, and might think about bringing up a game or two to show/sell/trade. My hatchback doesn't haul full machines very well ;)

Steve ritchie had a table and was selling some memorabilia. I think a buddy of mine bought some plastics and blueprints to high speed that he autographed.

There were about a dozen people selling stuff. Tim always comes up with boxes of misc parts and boards.

Plus there were probably 100 vids and pins with price tags on them.

I am not sure on varkon. Some games belong to people out of town and Ken and TJ store them and bring it to the show. Since varkon is a regular game, it might be ken and TJ's or some other show regular.

The 2nd year made the show space less of a mystery. I think move out went a little better. Everything was out by 2:30am on on tuesday. I think they organized the power usage a bit better this year as I don't think there were any popped circuits.

The main group of show organizers usually do a pre and post show meetings. As for the layout, I did see some sort of a floor plan. I think one of the reasons the video wall was on one side of the room was to keep it away from the pinballs. Or it could be thats where TJ set it up there and no one thought to/had the energy/the ability to move it. There probably was a reason, but since I don't go to any meetings, I am not sure. I am sure someone will read your comment on the music and take it into consideration for next year.

There are lots of little things that get missed. I would think more help would be a plus, but I would leave it up the show organizers to deicde if more help is needed. If you think you can help, feel free to drop a note on the CAX website. But you really need to say something weeks in advance. Knowing you can be counted on to help on thursday, friday or monday is way more useful that just showing up. If you have some special skills, let them know and they can try to find a use.. But if all you can do is work a windex bottle, thats important too.

Bill summed it up quite well. The Varkon belongs to another collector from so-cal, but has spent several years up here in the bay area. Same is true for a few other games. The Magical Truck Adventure was a recent acquisition, and fell from the sky in our direction because we're known for adopting the weird/big/heavy stuff. To give you an idea of the big stuff that we brought this year - Top Skater, DDR, PropCycle, Magical Truck Adventure, Cosmo Gang, Billy Bowl, 4x Rush 2049 TE, the videowall, etc. The Ken + TJ total for this year was 108 games. Not to mention the truckloads of pinballs and regular video games.

As for the barn comment - We used to have an industrial warehouse (5000 square feet) about 5 miles from the old show location, but the landlords raised our rent by 33% and forced us to move. The new location is very barn-like, with actual horses, goats, chickens, and other farm animals nearby -- So yes, Ken was semi-serious about that comment.

There are many people that make the show what it is. It's a community effort, and can't be done by one or two people alone. Many thanks to the other collectors that bring their games from hundreds of miles away to share, as well as the people that come to the show and give us inspiration for continuing our madness. The show continues to grow in awesomeness each year, amazing everyone that walks through the doors. It can't be done without the scores of people that volunteer to help out (always welcoming more).

The videowall location was on the floorplan in a different spot, but still with the cocktail games. I meant to put it in its correct location, but among the chaos, that's where it wound up. When it's in the middle of the room, it seems to get drowned out by game sounds from all sides. As for piping it through the ballroom sound system - Volume equalization across the various videos isn't that great, and a handful of songs get overplayed, which might become annoying.

Ken and I have known each other since '93 and both had a pre-existing game collecting habit. Since then, our collection has grown substantially (close to 400). Some games are owned by one or the other, while many are owned jointly by both of us. Targ (which has perfect attendance at every CAX) was the first game that we bought together -- It was $40, so we split it. When I'm not dealing with CAX stuff, I work for a nationwide game operator, fixing games all over Northern California (and sometimes traveling to other states).

I'll also give a thumbs up for Tanio being a great guy.

I'm looking forward to next year's show. As for hotel rooms - Wait for the announcement before you book so you can get the special rate (2010 show rate was $84/night)

Interesting CAX commentary removed
TJ, thank you so much for your commitment to putting CAX on and your sharing of your hobby/collection. As a collector with limited space, I look forward to CAX so that I can get my "fix" of all the games I love, but do not have the spoace/interest in to have in my home arcade. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

+1 and welcome to the KLOV forum! :)

That game absolutely killed me. Thanks to all the show staff and attendees for another incredible show!
