I picked up a Punch-out cabinet from a local guy a few weeks back. Was missing both monitors, bezel, and power supply(i now have all of that). The pcb had a ton of corrosion on the cpu board but the other two boards were really clean.

On my quest to get my pcb working, i bought an untested pcb to see if i could get at least one going. Upon receiving the untested pcb, i noticed that my pcb was actually a Super Punch-Out and not a regular Punch-Out like i had thought. I thought that was neat but after swapping the boards and roms in every possible combination, i finally broke down and bought a working PO pcb.

So yesterday i had some free time to mess with the SPO pcb that i originally got in the cabinet. I swapped all the roms and security board from the cpu over to the working cpu board. Hooked all the boards together and what do you know, SPO booted up and plays just fine.

So now, after that lengthy story, i need to make a decision. Do i restore the cabinet to Punch-Out or do i restore the cabinet to Super Punch-Out?

Here is what is needed in each case....

Super Punch-Out
- Side art w/Super decals
- Marquee
- CPO "Ducking Pull" overlay
- Convert Joystick to allow duck
- Wiring(for extra switch to allow duck)???

Punch-Out
- Side art

At this point, I am leaning towards just restoring back to Punch-Out like i had originally had intended. Seems to be the easiest and cost effective way to go about this.

Unless I'm mistaken, you could finish the Punch Out restoration, but install the "pull" joystick, and then swap the PCBs whenever you see fit?

Are you going to be keeping this? If so, make it a PO. If you are selling, make it a SPO.

The wiring is all in the CP for the joystick, and Mikes Arcade has all the essentials to make that happen. This Old Game has the ducking pull sticker, and will be printing the "Super" decals. Your only issue will be finding a marquee, but they pop up eventually.

Or, you can find another PO cab, and have both:

Yes, i will be keeping this cabinet.

If that is the case, then maybe i will go this route. Can anyone confirm i can just convert the joystick using mikes kits and then just swap pcb's whenever i want?

Jow, you mentioned that all the wiring is under the CP. I do remember seeing a couple extra wires when i had the CP off. You saying those extras are whats used for the ducking switch?

Your PO control panel is already wired for a SPO joystick. Just need to connect the unused wires. Mikesarcade has the parts to upgrade your joystick. Once you do that, the PCB is plug and play.

Confirmed. I do this with my machine. Mine happens to be in SPO guise, but the same thing applies to a machine in PO guise. All you need is an SPO 5-way joystick, and hook up the two auxiliary wires (either of the two black wires and the azure [sky blue] wire) which are already in your PO CP's wiring harness) to the 5th microswitch of the SPO joystick. The joystick will now be suitable for both SPO and PO. The gameboard is a direct swap.

Download the SPO manual for further details.

Consider yourself lucky. It wasn't too long ago that SPO stuff (joysticks, sideart, Ducking Pull sticker, etc.) were about as common as hen's teeth.

Nice find!

If you happen to want "JUST" original punch-out!! and want to part with the SUPER - PCB drop me a line! Id be more then happy to pay for a working Super PCB.

I did find a super PCB once. Waaaaaaaaaaaay over priced though. The guy wanted $275 UN-tested. A little steep

$275 for an untested PCB is pretty steep, but the last SPO kit sold for $550 on ebay.

NO surprise as it was probably an original kit possibly even unopened? Atleast it was tested with new joystick. I feared dishing out $275 just to receive it DOA

I'm pretty sure it wasn't unopened. There was a guy offering $1,000 for an NOS SPO kit on RGVAC a couple of years ago and no one had one. I'd be surprised if any still exist.

If I remember right, the kit that sold for $550 on eBay did not have the sideart or the Ducking Pull sticker. It was just the boardset, joystick, and marquee.

That SPO kit was from djdns on this forum. It wasn't new but all redone. Price isn't surprising, they don't pop up often. I had about $1000 in mine when it was all said and done...

Interesting history lesson here.

I spoke with a local guy ,who I got my Punch-Out from. He was a major player back in the 80's and owned 2 arcades. He claimed that the biggest reason that Super Punch out is so rare is because Nintendo did NOT sell a lot of upgrade kits. When they released the super kit, Punch-Out (original) was still bringing in a lot of quarters for arcade owners. Most did not feel the need to upgrade a cab that was already doing so well for them.

Thus, Super is now a rare bird. I fully understand why it has such a high price tag, just don't wanna pay that much for a single PCB when you could probably find an entire cab of a different game in excellent shape for that much

I'm getting ready to resto a PO cab one of these days. I am going to pick up the Super PO Art and if I ever see a SPO Marquee I'll try and snag that as well.

Also ZF your SPO is patiently waiting for you, haha.
