I just bought an
Out Run upright from Full Throttle last week, so that has been getting the most attention. Last night I finally, for the first time ever on this game, reached the end of the course. Just barely though, and I took the easiest stages too! Coasted to the goal line with 0.0 seconds left on the clock, so I got no bonus.

Final score was 10,191,xxx.
I had promised myself I wouldn't look up the top
Out Run scores until I had made it to the end of the game. It was sobering. The top Arcade score on Twin Galaxies is nearly 52.9 million by Richard Jackson, set in 1987. The top score on TG's MAME track is just over 53 million, by Martin Bedard. The top MARP score is 53.3 million. I've met Martin and know he is an extremely talented world class gamer (he's also the record holder on the sequel,
Turbo Out Run), so I'm confident these scores are very near the maximum possible. Obviously these three not only took the hardest route through the course to maximize their scoring they did so near perfectly at nearly the max speed possible. That's mindblowing.
After several more attempts I failed to reach the end again. So I moved over to
Donkey Kong and after killing off 3 games to get a good enough start I did a 577K. My last two DK sessions have now yielded scores in the 570s. I really need to get a camcorder and start recording my games. At this level if you play regularly a kill screen game can come at any time. I'd hate to be messing around for fun and put up a score good enough for 4th in the TG standings (my typical scoring rate is good enough for 910K-930K) and not have it on tape.
I played another game of
Out Run this morning while waiting for my wife to get ready for work. Game is seriously addictive. Side note: if you drive to work, probably not a good idea to play
Out Run just before leaving the house.

You'll look at the twists and turns and the multiple lanes of the Highway 99 downtown Seattle viaduct in a whole new way. It's suddenly damned hard not to floor it and pass as many cars as possible.
