I have found that with the various computer and TV monitors I have around the house, it's really hit and miss to find one that will display med res arcade. The best I have is this 20" Dell widescreen LCD, but even it displays a "WRONG RESOLUTION" warning in the center of the screen when connected to a med res arcade game. Is there a way to know which monitors will sync to med res?

EGA - 21.8kHz x 58.9Hz (Resolution - 640x350 @58)
EGA - 24.4kHz x 59.5Hz (Resolution - 645x355 @59)
EGA - 23.5kHz x 52Hz (Resolution - 720x378 @52)
EGA - 26.4kHz x 57.4Hz (Resolution - 720x400 @57)

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a TV or regular LCD monitor that'll do those freqs

Konami Racing Jam.

No, it does not switch to STD or HIGH def. Yes, I'm sure.

So...does this monitor sync to MED res?

Frequency Fh: 24~82kHz, Fv: 50~75Hz

I will say "in theory" yes it should work because the monitor supports 25khz horizontally. I only say in theory because I haven't personally used an LCD monitor being driven at EGA freqs.
Cut the SVGA cable and use that to wire up to your JAMMA harness. Sometimes a person will end up simply tying the sync wires together.

Look on the brightside if it doesn't work you can ship it back.

Honestly - if it were me and a game I were planning on keeping around I'd spend the money on a new tri-res crt. I have an LCD on my 60-1 and it's crap.

I'd love to, but a tri-res CRT is $400+. LCD is $160

That Racing Jam has a D-Sub connector, so I can just use a VGA cable from game to monitor.

What is the vert refresh rate for a med res arcade?

I am finding that arcade EGA is 60Hz vertical refresh. Is this correct?

If your going to be looking for old monitors and want to know what the specs are, you should check out the http://www.monitorworld.com site. I would always double check the info if the original manufacturers information is available, but it is nice to have quick place to check many old monitors when looking for CGA/EGA compatibility.

That's what came to my mind since 60 is clearly between 50 and 75.

Maybe Mike can explain his post...

I don't think he's coming back, and wouldn't you know...that monitor went up $30 today. Why did he have to chime in and say it wouldn't work?

If you ever find an answer to this question please let me know as I am looking for a medium res solution as well. I'll of course come back to this thread every now and then. Thanks!

I was all set to buy that monitor, as NewEgg was running it for $159. Now it's at $189.

Not to thread hijack but really? Would you happen to know if they can handle a CGA signal as well?

I might track down that NEC I saw on CL a while back so I can at least play some War Gods while I'm waiting for another solution.

Been ages since I messed with one.. I would be guessing to answer you. I know I used them on downgrade lvl of VGA.
