I have seen older and newer games with and without fan. Which games need them? Is it for the pcb or is it for the monitor? Or both? If my games don't have fans should I add one? If I add a fan do I just get the power from the 5v on the power supply ? What do you guy think?

They are mostly for the pcbs. But usually the games that need them already have them wired up inside the cab. If you don't see one don't worry about it. Games that have them usually have an opening in the body of the cab built-in just for the fan.

Let's see, I know Star Wars, Paperboy, Championship Sprint does... Probably a lot more.

On the 5v..Nooo. Tap the AC, use an AC fan.

Alot of cocktails seem to have them. Both of mine do (Donkey Kong and Crazy Kong), and I think most Midway ones did too. My Gaplus upright doesn't have one, just vents at the top and bottom on the back.

Monitor fan on my Zaxxon is really loud. I've been thinking about just disconnecting it and running with the back door off. The machine is seldom on for more than 3 hours. Anyone else do that?

Any Star Wars without extra fans are heading for disaster IMHO.

Some ops "solved" any fan noise by simply unplugging them and killed much electronics this way (like my Hard Drivin')

You definitely definitely should not add fans without thinking about airflow. Too many fans blowing in/out can trap air and actually make things worse. Think about where the air comes from and where it goes, and plan accordingly.

As a rule of thumb, don't remove fans, don't add fans. Make sure the fans present are working, and try to match CFM when replacing them. This doesn't always apply though, design mistakes happen.

Pole Position *snicker*, and 720. My fan is loud on my 720.

720 had a fan, Pole Position (uprights) didn't have fan's originally did they? They certainly NEED one, besides a much better power supply and +5V (25A) distribution system.

All Bally/Midway cocktails have them due to the very tight space with no chance for heat to rise.

Ms Pac CT has one.

On a side note, any game I bring to an expo gets wired wtih them. Pins get two, one in the back box and one in the cabinet.

I believe the Atari System 1 games had fans... Such as Road Runner, Marble Madness, Road Blasters, Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom, and Peter Packrat.

My Road Blasters has a fan that's not hooked up, but I never had any problems with it. But, it's usually on for not more than 3 hours at a time.
