Which games are better as a cocktail?

They also go in spaces where another upright won't work, say the middle of a room without obstructing the view of the games around them. You can squeeze in that 1 or 2 more games into your collection....their form factor have their place, IMO!

My vote, would be the beautiful Space Duel Cocktail, mine:

This is a great point!! I have 2 rooms with games and both of them have a great space for a cocktail cabinet. To each their own, but I don't like game rows/islands in the spaces I have available. Heck, I still have a pool table, I could fit at least a dozen more games in that space if I cared to. In 20 years, I haven't considered doing that.

Thanks! Go for it man, start the hunt....new awesome project time  !!! I'm gonna be able to put a 2nd cocktail in my arcade this way...I'm going to turn Space Duel cocktail 90 degrees and put the new one next to SD.....and have plenty of walk around room still between the row and the cocktails! Still have room in the rows...I should be able to fit two more(one more upright, one more cocktail) AND a pin this way into my limited space arcade and no view of the games obstructed! Cocktails definitely have their place!

Looks like your +5V is a little low. You'd better dial that in! :ROFLMAO:

Gauntlet, Space Invaders II Midway, and Ms. Pacman Twin are fun on a cocktail playing head to head.

You can be configure correct controls for the opposing player when running off a jamma pi emu system.

Arkanoid is great in cocktail format. I have one (and an upright too). The Roms are DIFFERENT for the cocktail due to the flip mode support. There's no DIP setting to go back and forth from upright to cocktail. Rumor has it that the Arkanoid bootlegs started popping up that supported cocktail mode, so Taito was forced to release a new version of roms that worked in cocktails too.

Tetris is superior in cocktails as well, IMHO. You sit across from your opponent and the game is VERTICAL with split screen upside down for the opposing player. Just like Arkanoid, there are different roms for the cocktail version. Game is horizontal with side by side split screen for 2 players in the upright.

I was a HUGE Arakanoid player in the standup arcade in the 90's, and I owned an Arkanoid cocktail in the 2000's. My personal opinion is that when playing on a cocktail version you will never get the correct perspective on the screen- generally your view is too low because you are seated so low in relation to the screen which is pointing UP. As a result the perceived speed of the ball moving in the "horizontal" directions is much faster than in the "vertical" directions. And if you are "expert" at keeping the ball in play when things start moving really fast you will have a very hard time on the cocktail unless you stand up and try and position your head up over the monitor while reaching down to the controller. And in this case the fact that glass on most cocktail machines extends/completely covers the controls means that in this position your wrist will be pressing against the edge of the glass as your hand tries to grip the spinner.

Don't get me wrong- I was enamored at having Arkanoid in a cocktail that could fit neatly into a room in my house- but I was never able to hit the the 1.5-1.8 million points on it that was normal for me on the upright for this reason.

Cocktails pretty much suck but I do agree that demolition derby is a fun cocktail
I've had one in the restoration queue for about 5 years now. Planned on getting it done to play with my kids. Shit they'll be out of the house by the time I get it finished.

They used to have one down at CrabTowne. I recall playing it with @Buffett and some others a while back. Unfortunately it's gone now.

I think I'm just gonna put it together as is and say fuck it. I've wasted enough time. I think I've talked to Rich about getting new artwork five or six different times over the years and nothing's ever been produced. I'm always told he can do it, but then other projects get in the way. It really isn't THAT bad, it's just way below my standards. But what good is the thing sitting here in pieces? I'm just gonna put it together and see what happens, fuck it. I and my kids are not getting any younger.

Some folks (like me) would rather have the machine with original/imperfect art than repro art anyway. Different strokes for different folks there.

I'd throw a +1 for Tetris cocktail, it works for the format, and they're not that common (I've not run into one for sale on my time in the hobby)...
