Just curious. Which do you like to work on more: microprocessor based boards, or those that predate integrated microprocessors? I'm sure everyone has an opinion. I certainly do. But I'll save my opinions for later. I'm interested in what others think.

It depends. If it's something that's rare or even uncommon I don't mind working on state machine boards. All others I prefer working on uP boards because they're more predictable.

If it moves electrons, I'm there. Least favorite: Galaga and its 50 million socketed ICs - ok it just seems like there are 50 million.

+1 on Galaga being a least favorite. I just finished one today that kicked my ass for quite a while.

Galaga's a bitch for sure.

I'd pick IC boards though because I got into the computer biz around 1987 or so and cut my teeth on building PC's. Believe it or not the practices don't change much from building a 286 or repairing a Centipede.

Probably my favourite board to repair is Namco's System 1 (Splatterhouse, Pac-Mania, Galaga '88, etc) - it's certainly not the easiest, but I get a certain pleasure from fixing them.

The only board(set) that I DETEST is the stacked boards in a cage as used by Gorf, Wizard of Wor, Robby Roto, etc. They are a pain and a half, simply due to the fact you can't access anything other than the top board when you want to do some testing.

A little reminder of what these look like:
