Which do you like better? SEGA Genesis or SNES and why?

It was Sony who pwn'd Sega. Sony was cranky at Nintendo for cancelling the partnership to create the CD drive for the SNES that they helped develop, so they went on to create the PlayStation to get revenge and accidently took out Sega instead.

Yep. That was the biggest mistake Nintendo ever made (though there was more to it than that). Yes, an even bigger mistake than the Virtual boy :D

Needless to say, it was the best move Sony ever made.

I remember back in the SNES days saying how it would be amazing if Sony ever made a console (I was a sony fan boy back then when it came to electronics). A few years later they did and look where it got them.

Honestly, it was probably better for Nintendo not to partner with Sony. Two big companies (Sony being the bigger of the two) collaborating, one would have had to give into the other and it probably would have been Nintendo. Not the greatest analogy, but it's like Disney acquiring Pixar. It wouldn't have lasted forever as just a collaboration.

But you're right, back then, it was interesting to see Sony come out with a console since you looked at them as more of a TV, Walkman, etc. type of company. It makes me wonder if Apple (who already has a big chunk of the mobile gaming market) would ever consider coming out with a console that was faster, sleeker, etc. Of course, they'd offer it in black and white. :)

Well, I was thinking more in line of what would Sony's consoles be now if they had completed the original PlayStation SNES addon? They likely wouldn't be called "PlayStation," that's for sure. That collaboration may have changed everything as we know it. I honestly think that gaming would have taken a much different path had that addon been completed.

Agreed. Haha.

SNES CD would have been interesting. Hopefully, better than Nintendo CDi games.

But they offer such great comedic value.

The post above is not to be taken literally and is meant as sarcasm on the part of Mattroid. Thank you.

Bah. I guess I'm misremembering. I had thought I remembered an old preview in Nintendo Power where they were announcing the SNES CD and I thought it actually had a "PlayStation" logo on it in the drawing. I've gone through all my 1991-1993 issues and found no such article. I did find one that I think is what I'm remembering in the June '93 issue of Game Players, though the logo is not there...so maybe I saw some photoshop years later where someone put the PS logo on one of the old SNES CD images. EDIT: Okay good, I'm not completely misremembering. The addon was eventually dubbed the "Play Station" - but I don't know where I'm getting the image from in my head :p EDIT EDIT: Okay, I guess I'm not totally misremembering. Attached is a pic that I think I once saw another version of elsewhere. Tonight has been fun and informative :)

Who knows.

Though going through some of these old magazines has really brought back some cool memories. Such as...I still remember all the old Mario Bros comics in NP; the Link as depicted in the Zelda comics in NP was an emo mother fucker; I could have entered a contest to hang out with DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (lol); and every SNES game reviewed in NP was apparently "awesome!" even Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, and we all know that is a filthy fucking lie.

Good times.

There are some really interesting articles that are really cool to read now, years later, though. Probably the best part of all this was reading all the hype for the SNES CD and how awesome the digital format was, and then, a year later, reading a lengthy article basically dismissing the CD format at a pile of slow shit. Oh, silly Nintendo.

Yeah I agree with this. Nintendo and Sony couldn't come to an agreement over the SNES CD, so it was probably better in the long run that Nintendo didn't sell its soul to Sony in some bad deal arrangement.

It was really inevitable that Sony would enter the game market at some point, with Nintendo in partnership or without. That was just the event that made them tip their hat into the ring. Nintendo wasn't in any real danger though, mainly due to their handheld market dominance with the Gameboy.

Apple did try once at getting into the console market with the aborted Pippin. You could argue that Apple is already in the handheld gaming market with the iPod Touch/iPhone. They're just done it by stealth, and marketed them as media/phone devices first. If Apple didn't care about the gaming app store dollars, they'd have allowed flash on their iOS devices. It would not surprise me at all if Apple decided to have a tilt at the home console/media center market. I'm sure they'll call it the i-something-that's-already-copyright-by-someone-else, go through court and come up with some settlement that results in them being able to use the name...

Sega isn't, and you can't play Mario, Zelda or Metroid on any other console.

And that's a bad thing? Personally, I think Mario has run it's course for games. Do we really need any more?

Everybody seems to have the opinion the Snes *superior* audio quality to the Genesis. I know when I had both hooked up at the time; I bought a brand new (best at the time) Pioneer 702 receiver and some Vega speakers. Maybe I'm more of an audiophile, but I thought the Genesis was superior in most of the games.

My 2 cents....

i always liked sega better, nintendo is for little kids and girls.
Growing up, that's pretty much what everyone said in my neighborhood. Nintendo was for kids, real gamers played Sega.
I never had a SNES though (still don't), so I can't really compare the two.
Looks like based on the positive reviews here I may have to pick one up.

Dude, I understand if you've never owned one, but you've never even played one? That's astonishing. :)

If you do pick one up, I recommend:
Super Mario World 1 & 2
Super Mario Kart
Super Metroid
Super Castlevania IV

If you're into RPGs:
Final Fantasy I & II (actually IV and VI)
Earthbound
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger

I think I may have played one maybe once. I have it on emulation on my Xbox too, which I know the emulation isn't that great.
Nobody I knew ever had one... I'll definitely check it out though. It's been on my "wanted" list for a while, but there's just been a few more consoles that I've wanted to pick up first.

Starflight was damn hard. I had a hard time not running out of fuel, but you are right, that game was very deep for its time. Fun too. Another RPG that comes to mind was Might & Magic for the Genesis, that was very involved to the point of needing to remember to feed your party and having to be at certain areas at different times of the day, even different years. Very intense and a fantastic RPG. Other great Genesis RPGs...

Sword of Vermillion
Super Hydlide
Shining In The Darkness
Shining Force
Shinning Force II
Phantasy Star II-IV
The Immortal
Wonder Boy In Monster World

The Immortal and Wonder Boy arn't really RPG's. But D & D Warriors of the Eternal Sun was, and it was great.

The SNES was technically better because it had 8 channel ADPCM audio, the Genesis used mainly FM synthesis. You could still do impressive things with FM synthesis, but the SNES just sounded richer.

I don't think anything on the Genesis can match this:

Well that clearly puts the audio question to bed, the Street Fighter 2 differences were nuts. I only had it on the SNES, never even realized the Genny was that far off and horrible.

SNES also had Dolby Surround.. I remember playing Jurassic Park through my surround setup I had as a kid with the lights out, was pretty awesome at the time.

No offense, but that's only 3 examples. Like I said, hook it up to a nice stereo system and you can *hear* the difference.....

Supposedly, the PS3 has better specs than the 360, but when it came to some games the 360 was superior.;)

Like I said in the previous post... I like both systems but give the nudge to the Genesis....

If you want to hear some good music on the Genesis, go play anything by Technosoft. Thunder Force 2, Thunder Force III, Herzog Zwei, Elemental Master or Dragon's Fury. Both systems are great though, I can't pick just one.

Originally I was a very big Genesis fan (And still am) but recently I've been gravitating towards the SNES after having found and playing a lot more of its high-quality arcade ports and long adventure games. The Genesis is great and all, but I've got 91 games for it and I feel that there's not as much variety, and that the games just aren't as fun as they used to be. Still love the Sega CD and 32x though.

I do have them hooked up to a nice stereo system. As I said, not denying there's good music on the Genesis, but it just sounds lo-fi, like it's at a lower bitrate compared to the best on the SNES. The drum and bass samples in particular sound a lot cleaner on the SNES. More aural SNES goodness...

Yes, the 360 has a couple of clever features that give it the edge over some of the raw numbers on the PS3 (eg, PS3's fast 3.2GHz CPU memory speed). The 360 has a marginally better video chip that gives MSAA for free, and has a couple of memory tricks up its sleeve with its 10MB eDRAM buffer and ability to share the 512MB in the system between 3-core hyperthreaded CPU and GPU. The PS3 has some impressive numbers, but in reality, its CPU is somewhat limited because only one of the cores is a full CPU, the rest are cut down, so while it's theoretically better at running a physics engine, it's more difficult for the developers of games software to utilize the PS3 CPU power. And PS3 memory, while also 512MB, is partitioned 256MB to the CPU and 256MB to the GPU.

In reality, they're pretty darn close. Both are great systems. It irks me though that they keep billing the PS3 as a 1080p system, but very few games actually run at 1080p. Most are 720p at best.

Like I said in the previous post... I like both systems but give the nudge to the Genesis....

It does come down to personal preference. I prefer the SNES, we're not going to change each other's opinion. ;)
