Which do you like better? SEGA Genesis or SNES and why?

I say that the general consensus is that the SNES is better is based upon the overwhelming responses in this thread that supports it. Most of the people on here say that they like the SNES more than the Genesis, while only a couple/few have voiced a preference for the Genesis. I own ALL of the systems, including THREE PS3's and two Xbox 360's, one of which is a Japanese console...

I really don't think it's "overwhelming" though... like I said I like both!

There is also Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey for the sports fans :)

I'm going Genesis, I still play NHL 94 to this day.:)

I actually loved NHL 93. One of the biggest challenges is trying to win with the San Jose Sharks. I think they may be the worst team in the game or maybe 2nd to the Ottawa Senators. Funny how times have changed.

i always liked sega better, nintendo is for little kids and girls.

I really liked both, both systems had exclusive games that made them great but it's really not even debatable which machine had the legs, the SNES first-party lineup for that system was unbeatable.
SMW, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country series, Metroid, Super Punch-Out!!, A Link to the Past, Yoshi's Island, Starfox, Kirby, F-Zero, Pilotwings. Seriously - the first party games alone left a gap that Sega and their 3rd party devs couldn't hang with. This could be the entire SNES catalog and a lot of people would still call the Super the better machine.

Sega did real good with all the advertising about Nintendo being for the kiddies and the Genesis being for the teens - I bought into it. You'll see guys saying that same shit even now - "I don't want that kiddy crap, I'd rather play a game with huge ripped dudes beating the shit out of each other and rolling on the ground all sweaty and shit." It's just 100% douche to discount a system because it has some titles with cute characters.

I am glad that whole era is over, i loved game mags as a kid and every advert had brains, skulls, boogers, turds, stinky grandmas, weird looking creeps, puke, and blood in them.

All that said - SNES > GENESIS X10 - Even though I do like the Genesis. I've kept Ghostbusters, X-Men, and Ghouls N' Ghosts - I'd like to try Castlevania Bloodlines or whatever, but I'm not convinced it's better than either of the Super Nintendo offerings - Castlevania IV was the motherfucking bomb.

True that, all of the editions up to 94 were pretty good, after that I just can't take it....
The good news is you can play 94 with current rosters if you like and trust me the Sharks are a much better team now.:D

Starflight was damn hard. I had a hard time not running out of fuel, but you are right, that game was very deep for its time. Fun too. Another RPG that comes to mind was Might & Magic for the Genesis, that was very involved to the point of needing to remember to feed your party and having to be at certain areas at different times of the day, even different years. Very intense and a fantastic RPG. Other great Genesis RPGs...

Sword of Vermillion
Super Hydlide
Shining In The Darkness
Shining Force
Shinning Force II
Phantasy Star II-IV
The Immortal
Wonder Boy In Monster World

You forgot.....
D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun

Weeeelllll, which one is still being made? Genesis! Win. In South America, you don't even have to buy carts for it. It comes loaded with a shit ton of games, brand new.

I had both growing up. Both were great consoles and each had its choice of great games.hardware wise I would say snes had the advantage tho.

but has anyone mentioned the sega channel yet? To me that was so far ahead of its time. I would compare it to what onlive is doing now. Once I got sega channel my snes got played a whole lot less.

Gotta go with the Genesis based soley on the fact that it was the system I had as a kid and relates back to an awesome childhood. I was never really into the fighting games, but Super Mario Kart is hands down one of the greatest racers on any system as far as I'm concerned. Used to play countless hours of Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic Spinball, NBA Jam, and FlashBack on Sega. I'll concede that the SNES was more popular in my circle of friends, but at least Sega's Jurassic Park kicked ass.

Jurassic Park on the Genesis was fucking awesome - good call bro - I got the Super Nintendo version a few months back in a bulk buy, and it's amazingly bland. I had the Sega CD game at one time in the 90's and that sucked ballzack - However it did have FMV of Robert T Bakker, the real paleontologist that they reference in the movie.

I agree Super Castlevania IV is a great game - I like it better than Symphony of the Night, but I digress.....

Castlevania Bloodlines is a awesome game! It actually to me a long time to find it. I remember looking for it in the mid 90's to no avail. It wasn't until Ebay came along that I snatched up a copy.

I had the SNES back in the day, and my buddy had the Mega Drive (as the Genesis was known down under). I had to say, we had loads of fun with both systems, but the SNES had the edge for me.

I loved fighting games, and the game that sold me a SNES was the excellent port of Mortal Kombat II. I played a fair bit of the Mega Drive version as well (my buddy had it), and while both versions played well, the SNES version had the edge for sound and graphics, and in playability (controllers were nicer, and combos seemed to work better).

Plus the SNES had Street Fighter 2 as an exclusive for quite a long time. When the Champion Edition came out for the MD, the SNES got Turbo. When Super SF2 came out on both systems, the SNES one was still the version to have, with far better sound and more colourful graphics. Then Killer Instinct came out... Quite an achievement on the SNES.

The Mega Drive was much, much earlier to the market than the SNES, so it had a head start. But the SNES games just looked more colourful, and sounded much nicer. The Donkey Kong Country games and Yoshi's Island are probably the best looking exclusives on the console.

On the Xbox 360 vs PS3 'competition' front - I think that the current generation of consoles are much of a muchness. The PS3 has Blu-ray as a selling point, but this hasn't translated into any real advantage in terms of ability as a game console. Most games that come out on both platforms are almost identical. More often than not, where there are differences, the version with the slight advantage in video quality and frame rate is the 360 version, but the differences are ever so slight. If anything, the PS3 with its "superior" Blu-Ray drive usually has longer loading times than the 360. Both consoles have suffered from 'bad ports' of titles that were developed with the other platform as the lead development platform. Current Xbox 360 S models are reliable and have Wi-Fi N built in.

Both consoles have good exclusives. It comes down to if you prefer Gears of War, or God of War really... I would say neither is outright superior to the other.

Nintendo PWN's Sega. They are still making consoles, Sega isn't, and you can't play Mario, Zelda or Metroid on any other console. Nowadays Sonic is everywhere and is on life support (although the classics are great).

It was Sony who pwn'd Sega. Sony was cranky at Nintendo for cancelling the partnership to create the CD drive for the SNES that they helped develop, so they went on to create the PlayStation to get revenge and accidently took out Sega instead.
