Good Guy Alert: Pete Mathis!

I bought two of the 60in1(a) boards and Pete and I started working on two cabinets to get them running. The first cabinet, "Devastators" had a bad monitor, but the spare 19" monitors all had issues or never turned on at all. After hours of work, we switched gears and took a "Dragon Spirit" and made it work great. The most interesting "mod" was taking an old computer power supply to feed the 60in1 board since the "Dragon Spirit" power supply wasn't feeding enough to get the 60in1 to fire up correctly (Pete's idea and it worked awesome). Therefore, we have a great looking 19" system ready to roll.

However, the was a 2nd system that started coming together - an old "Raiden" cabinet. Knowing that the monitor on in the "Raiden" machine was shot, Pete grabbed a monitor and plugged it in. Our eyes melted as we saw the beautiful, bright and flawless display come to life. This was an amazing picture and the set acted like a newborn tube - crisp and clean! The only downside is that the dynamo cabinet is butt- ugly! Pete spent another day fixing up that machine (and tweaking the other) to get them to both work, look sharp and play great. See the pics below:

Which would you choose?

1. GREAT BIG MONITOR and crappy cabinet? (left)
2. Small great monitor and BEAUTIFUL CABINET? (right)

It's a win-win in my book, but it's a tough decision. Either way, Pete keeps the better system! Pete's know-how, guidance (I'm new to this) and patience in this project earns him a gold star. So. Which one would you choose and why?

Smaller better looking cab.

1) Classics were 19"
2) Sharp monitor > big any day
3) Dual joysticks make no sense
4) More space for other games

I would go with the big monitor, and fix up the cab. I had a big monitor in mine. Loved that machine. Someone offered me stupid money for it, because the monitor was so big!!

Depends on your situation... Do you want to work on the control pannel, or just leave it as-is? If you don't want to do any work, then this is a no-brainer in favor of the Dragon Spirit. That second stick on the Raiden machine combined with a crappy CPO kills it. If you're willing to do some work, that big monitor looks brilliant, and that's the one to take. If you feel like being lazy, then Dragon Spririt is for you. Also, is this going to sit in a line-up with a bunch of other machines? If so, you'll never see the side art, in which case I'd take the Raiden. If it's going to sit out and you don't feel like re-finishing it, take the Dragon Spirit. My Mappy sits out, and lots of visitors comment on how good the side art looks on that machine.

Most classics look bad on anything bigger than 19".

I would t do 60-in-1 ever with the terrible latency. Have you tried one?

I'd go with the bigger monitor, paint the cabinet and make a new control panel for it.
I disagree with the comment about classics looking bad on larger monitors. The old graphics are like art to me, and blowing them up doesn't hurt them at all.

I agree I had a 28in computer monitor in my 60-1 looked unreal. Games looked great on a big monitor. Most classics were on 19's, but they looked great on a bigger monitor. Now I think they look like crap on a flat screen monitor.

I didn't have any latency issues with my testing. The sound issues are a bummer. They are not emulated perfectly and sometimes they are very (VERY) distorted. I will play more with the audio to see if I can at least turn it down.

There are some pros and cons about how the iCade system works too. The game kicks you back to the choice screen after 1 game. This is great for parites, but a little annoying if you wanna settle in for a dozen games of Donkey Kong, for example. I enjoy the Neo Geo 150in1 cart a lot more if you want to play, continue and support 2 player. The NeoGeo list alone cannot hold up to the classics...

I would go for the big monitor/crappy cab. In those pics, though, the cabinet did not look too bad. I kinda like the dynamo look.

Yeah, I love the Dynamos for the accessibility.

What you don't see in the pics: The laminate on the right side of the Dynamo is starting to come off...it'll need some more adhesive. Nearly every bolt is rusted on the control panel. The thing is filthy as heck. The sideart ("Fabtek") will probably need to be removed....because who wants a cab that says "Fabtek??"

The 25" monitor is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

The 19" monitor in the Dragon Spirit is one of those Sanyo-20EZ's....but modified (can't be used in the Donkey Kong games...where you frequently find them). It looks VERY nice, but it is an oddball monitor.

Dragon Spirit has buttons on both sides of the joystick, so you can play lefty/righty...also a bonus because I find myself playing Galaga with the right hand working the button, but I play Dig Dug with my left hand working the button. Odd...

It will be easier for me to "hide" the Raiden cab in my arcade. (see link in signature...I've got room to work with). I could also find a spot to "showcase" the Dragon Spirit sideart if needed.

Every time I think I've made a decision, I change my mind.
