The point of the story is about a 99 year old gamer, but I honestly didn't know the average gamer was 37.

According to the Entertainment Software Association, the average gamer is 37 years old. Kids born the day the original Nintendo was released are entering their late 20s, while geeks who whiled away the days with a Pong machine are storming past 40.

But compared to Umeji Narisawa, we're all just a bunch of babies.

Japanprobe caught up with the 99-year-old gamer, who got hooked on the hobby at the tender age of 73 when her grandkids brought home a copy of the action/puzzle classic Bomberman for the NES (technically the Famicon, the Japanese version of the system.) Narisawa was intrigued, gave it a shot, and has been playing it for several hours a day since.
So what does playing Bomberman every day for 26 years get you? Other than the ability to beat it with your eyes closed and the undying respect of anyone who's every picked up a gamepad, it gets you a few nifty health benefits. Narisawa credits her daily Bomberman sessions with helping keep her mind sharp and her fingers strong enough to still thread needles.

While Narisawa needn't fear competition from too many other 99 year-olds, she might want to keep an eye on John Bates. The Wisconsin gamer is the current Guinness World Record holder for the Most Perfect Games of Wii Sports Bowling (2,850), though he's a regular spring chicken at a mere 85.

Oh yeah. Has been following those born in 74 / 75 since they've been taking those polls. Next year, it will be 38, following 39, etc.

Amazing right? Hooked us at a young age and we will take it through life. We were the pioneers (we = those growing up during the arcade era).

I'm 52 and I started out with Pong, probably in 1975 or so. I know quite a few people who started out the same way. We played games like Steeplechase, Breakout, Gun fight, Basketball, Anti-Aircraft, Tank, Dominoes, Night Driver, Canyon Bomber, and then in 1976 we got to play Starship 1. Still one of my favorites.

It depends how you define gamer, because it sure doesn't seem like many 37 year olds are playing Call of Duty, at least if Xbox Live is any sort of measurement.

Id say that 99yo woman throws off the results. It also depends what they define as a gamer. I have friends who own an xbox and I wouldn't consider them gamers. But other people might because they own that xbox. They do not have any other systems and they usually only play 1 or 2 games like madden and call of duty.

Makes total sense to me,although it doesn't specify what games they are playing on average. I'd be more curious about that. Most gamers at or around that average age played tons of classic arcades and also played the hell out of the Atari,Colecovision, and NES systems most likely. I also think that most people around this age aren't going to blow a ton of dough on these newer overpriced systems as well. Just my .02 anyway.

I'm sure they count games like Farmville and the likes. That being the case, millions of women (and men, too I guess... probably) waste hours on those.

At least 8 of every 10 statistics are made up on the spot. I don't know why we should believe this one.
