I just acquired an old Time Warp Pinball Machine that is stuck in diagnostics mode. I have been searching the internet for information and have downloaded Mark's guide but was hoping to get a theory of operations guide so I can better understand the logic behind the games. I reset all the connections and have run through the diagnostics but can't get it to power up in anything but diagnostics mode.

Anyone know of a good manual of operations for William's Pinball games.

This has all you need to know about this series of games. Just go through it step by step and you'll more than likely end up with a working game at the end.

You will need to replace that 40 pin connector between the MPU and driver board. You'll probably need to replace the sockets that hold various chips on the MPU if they are of the SCANBE variety.

Good Luck!

If it's in diagnostic mode, the two most common problems are either dead batteries (most often this is all that it is). The other option is the 5101 ram and/or the blocking diode.

Try some new batteries.

This is what it will look like if you boot with no batteries:

I'm not aware of a theory of operation guide for Williams games but here's the Bally version. A lot of the concepts will apply to all pinball machines:

Thank you for the replies. The batteries are probably the problem. They were corroded in when I got the game and it looks like the corrosion damaged one of the contacts enough that the battery holder will have to be replaced.

There are 3 rom sockets on the bottom of the MPU board but only 2 are populated. Are there supposed to be 3?

I would suggest a remote battery holder. That is discussed in detail on pinrepair.com. You'll want to remove the corrosion while you're at it.

You can usually turn the game off then back on again quickly to get past the diagnostic mode. Alternatively you could manually reset the MPU for the same effect.

If the EPROMs are 2732 then 2 would be normal for that game. If they are 2716 you will have 2 flipper ROMs and one game ROM.

My battery's were the problem in my Firepower. Put in new batteries still nothing. Turned it on an off still nothing. But then I read that the coin door needs to be open for the on and off trick and everything was fine!
