Trying to verify some ROMs for a fellow collector's Marble Madness and believe that a couple 27128s are bad (excessive current error on my EP-1140).

Anyone know where I can get some 27128s (or equivalent) relatively cheap???

Hey Mike,

Something relatively local to you? Try:

Etech Recycling Inc
21376 Potomac View Rd, Sterling, VA 20164
(703) 421-4340

These guys recycle electronics/computers and have used junk all over the place. Don't pay more than $5/lb for ceramic chips (EPROMs). Obviously, you'll need to clean/erase the parts yourself.

Something not so local? Try coinopchips.com OR you can talk to Shilmover (here on KLOV)!!! LOL

5 bucks a pound? That would be one hell of a price!

Buying used chips by the pound is somewhat of a secret that's been around since the early 90's at the very least. Just look for electronic/computer salvage/recycling places in your area. You'll find a LOT more than EPROMs. The going rate used to be as cheap as $1.5/lb back in 1990, but times have changed. Right now, $5/lb for ceramic and $4/lb for plastic resin (ram, ttl, etc). I used to find Data I/O programmers and the occasional arcade circuit board....now it's mostly chips, tools and odd equipment. Give it a shot, call around and ask.

LOL

I just picked up a "couple" from Dave (partially to fix my MM boards, which I did before getting the chips from Dave).

How many do you need?

I'm with you on the value of time. In my case, having to pull stickers, clean the chips, straighten pins and erase them....TOO MUCH work. I'd rather pay $0.10-$1.00 per chip and be done with it. LOL Finding those low price deals on NOS parts seems to be a lot more likely these days with distributors in every state going belly up. There's a LOT of good stuff floating around out there.... oh, and much of these NOS parts end up at these recycling establishments, btw. Keep that in mind, you can find tubed up NOS parts.

For instance, in my area there's ReComp Group, Silicon Salvage and Goldn'West Surplus. All of these places have an incredible stock of junk.....If you're in OC, check them out!!

Before I was married with kids, I had plenty of time to process used EPROMs. There's NO way I'd EVER deal with them now. On the other hand, used RAM isn't nearly as much work. I'm more inclined to at least consider them.

All of the stuff I'm talking about are parts with are sockets and have already been removed from boards, though....no desoldering. If I had to remove soldered in parts, I wouldn't have anything to do with them at all from that point.

Depends on what you get...

It's not really worth my time to sort and test pulls and desoldered parts to get what I want... heh.
