My search-fu is weak, where is a good place to buy Robotron lit up type buttons? I know there are lots of lit up kinds you can buy but I am looking for as close to the robotron kind as I can get.

I think they are just transparent buttons with #44 Lamps underneath them... Or at least that's what Sinistar had.
And If you need transparent buttons, I think Bob Roberts and ArcadeShop sell them.

I might have to get my Bubbles cabaret buttons backlit somehow. They're the same transparent buttons, but looks like they didn't go the extra step of extending the harness to them to light `em up...

404 on that link.

I'm restoring a robotron and the previous owner snipped the lamps off. I took two lamps from a midway style coin door and wired them together (yellow and white wires to the cp wiring harness I believe). Then bent the metal back 180 degrees and screwed em in next to each blue translucent start button. Worked like a charm.

Arcadeshop has the transparent blue leaf buttons.

Arcadeshop used to only have the light blue ones. Robotron uses dark blue.

Twisted Quarter usually has them but it looks like they only have red and green right now: http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4_154

Centsible Amusements also usually has them, but appear to be out: http://www.centsibleamusements.com/translucentleafswitchpushbuttons.aspx

Pinballlife looks like they have the blue ones: http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=1692&parent=234

what does it look like under the panel when you hook the lights up? is there a special bracket or something?

The ones from PinballLife are the ones I got for mine (I'm pretty sure- I'll have to check my older posts).

Like others have said, there's simply a light socket under the button. Since the buttons aren't a solid color the light permeates through. Then you have to deal with it getting drowned out by the light coming down from the marquee though. :(

Hope this helps!

EDIT: here is the thread from when I was looking for my buttons:
