I'm facing the same problem as Tighe in this thread: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=99204
My board appears genuine, Capcom logos everywhere, holographic AAMA sticker and all. However, it has midair moves, altered colors, etc. The ROMs 28-31 & 35-38 are hacked. (SF2 TBS)
So I acquired a fresh set of 8, verified them, fired it up... Blasting noise, and the coin meter clicks like crazy. Sent a chill up my spine. :O

On closer inspection, the hack ROMs from sockets 29, 30, 35, 36, & 37 are verified genuine, but the one that was in socket 30 is actually sf2_31a and the one from socket 37 is sf2_38a...?

Now, putting the hack ROMs back in, exactly how they were, I am greeted with a RAM test telling me my work RAM is no good.

It's on the A board - the bottom one.

Check the bottom of it carefully for bent pins that are touching other ones... or for gouged traces.

You just swap the ep-rom chips.

Thats how SF2 became SF2 Champion Edition and that became Rainbow Edition.

The ep-rom chips are under that small board that the kick harness plugs into.

Do these CPS1 roms have encryption/protection on them? So if I have a spare CPS1 board, can I fry some alternative roms for it?

@channelmanic:
I was extremely careful with the board when I had it out to swap the ROMs, regardless I looked over the entire surface with a magnifying glass and could see nothing wrong.

@HollasaurusRex:
I'm not dealing with those chips, the sockets you speak of under the C board are empty! My board has 8 game ROMs in sockets 28-31 & 35-38.

@orion3311:
CPS1 ROMs are not encrypted.

Thanks guys, but I still can't get it going. My original question stands - which chip(s) hold the work RAM?
