What I did was use some tracing paper to trace the patterns (taped to the cabinet). I then taped the tracing paper to some thin cardboard sheets (forgot what it is called exactly, but I got these at an office supply store - Staples here in Canada) and cut it out. I used a combination of a utility knife (fresh blade) and one of those rotating knives (round disc that you roll across the surface to cut - any sewing store carries these).
I also picked up some repositional 'mounting' spray glue from the same office supply store - sprayed the back of the 'patterns' (2 directions) and let dry for about 1 hour. I then applied the 'stencil' to the cabinet, the glue was tacky enough to hold the 'card board' in place and didn't really allow any bleed through and came off fairly easy without lifting any previous coats or leaving a film - just make sure you allow your paint to dry before removing the 'stencil'.
