Where did all the Defenders go?

Great read!

I can chime in on where two went. I own an original dedicated with mostly intact stenciled side art (Not the sweet silver pinball coin door however.)

And I have a Neo Geo that was converted from a Defender that does have the sweet silver williams coin door.

Both were a steal! But that was some years ago now.

Dunno about 54,999 of them but I know where my 1 is...

Defender was an awesome game but when it stopped earning, man did it ever stop earning.

I worked for an operator that had over 300 of them. Our only choice was to scrap and convert.

That's pretty sad but totally justifiable. Further, I think that it was a big strategic mistake for Williams to release Stargate right after selling so many Defenders. Stargate was a cool sequel but all it really added was a few enemies and the gate (warp to skip some levels). Stargate was really the same game done over again. Operators and players alike would prefer to play the so-called new and improved Defender so the net effect of Stargate was to kill Defender. Williams scored a huge hit with Defender and then promptly killed it. They should have left well enough alone. Don't get me wrong, I like Stargate and wouldn't wish it gone but I just don't think it was a smart move by Williams. The same man-hours and resources that created Stargate could have been used instead to create a game with an entirely new concept of play.

Here is a machine I need to get the full story on. A medical student from the Philly area played it in college bitd. He won this machine in a tournament. It is a total mess with barn debris and even a snake skin in it. He would like to have it restored someday.... cough cough. He is a surgeon at out local hospital.

Thought I'd share a bit of Saturday night light reading for all you Klovers.

Where did all the Defenders go?

This may not be the best place to post this, but I'm feeling brave today...

This is what happened to my Defender.

Yes, I bought it as a Golden Axe and no, there was nothing left from Defender inside it.

I was going to start a thread in the restore section, but I've been unable to locate the before pics.
