Where are the Mame guys at?

MALA has its own subforum at BYOAC. You can download different themes o find one you like better than the stock one. I agree, that one is not very good. What do you find buggy in MALA?

I like mala .105, I generally don't use the newer versions. To customize the backgrounds and what you want to show, like how big the snaps are, what text boxes you want to show, game list font, gradations, graphics, etc; you use the mala layout editor, a seperate program from the front end itself.
When you refresh the game list, it will show everything in the roms folder you have pointed mala to. To slim down the list, you need to delete each game individually. Be careful when you refresh the list again if you have not removed roms you don't want in your list, they will just show up again. When you have lots of games in your list, this can become a very long and tedious process. Correct nomenclature and organization of image files is absolutely essential.

I'm about ready to chuck this whole idea. I download the latest emulators and they still dont work with hyperspin and have the same issues with mala. Genesis wont load the roms, SNES makes mala a minimized window on exit, and I'm still having to use a mouse to exit everything except mame (which I'm trying to avoid). I figured out how to filter games in Mala and customize the menu a little, but I'm still not happy.

If I send someone my hard drive, can anyone help me out with this? I'd like to have it setup where I can do everything from the control panel (without using a mouse). I'm easy as far as design, just want something that works and looks decent. I just can't figure it out.

OK, I'm finally making a little progress with Mala. Got a layout I like and its running Mame well. I guess I'm coming to terms that it just wont run other emulators without using a mouse. If I'm wrong please tell me.

Now I'm just wanting to know, is there an option for a screen saver, and how do I do that? Also can't figure out how to auto launch Mala on startup. Please give me some clues.

I also need to know how to lose bezels and overlays. I have them turned off in Mame but they still show up in Mala.

Check out this forum post, which has a Mala FAQ Word document that's very comprehensive:

Cool, thanks for the link. If I ever get time, I will read it over and figure it out. In the meantime Ill just focus on MAME and try to get the rest going when I get around to it. Finally figured out the screen saver and startup with windows, so for now I'm done bench testing and ready to work on the cab.

Mala and Hyperspin are the "new hotness".

I'm still using the "ol' busted joint" MameWah. I set it up an eternity ago, and it works well enough for me. I will eventually move over to HyperSpin.

Just wanted to mention the old workhorse MameWah in this thread, I really appreciated it back in the day.

That was the first front end I used as well. I had a hell of a time with it. It seemed so simple, you just edited text files. For some reason I couldn't ever get it to recognize what I'd edited. Someone made a configuration tool that finally made it easier to get it going. I never did figure out what I was doing wrong.

Anyone know how to rewrite a Galaga rom for turbo fire? Or where I can find it?

Also looking for a Tapper rom with working sound.

i solved most of these problems by searching and trial and error. its been such a pain i wont even upgrade the computer from the shitty old laptop i am using because i spent so much damn time getting everything configured properly that i dont want to have to do it again! my last mame build i used plain old mame32 generic interface because i didnt feel like messing with mala forever again...

ps: i use a mouse for the other emulators
