When New Old Stock is Bad Old Stock - NOS Cheyenne CPO Disaster

Recently purchased a NOS Cheyenne CPO. Was thrilled to get it and couldn't wait to apply it. It had a few small tears on the bottom and some pretty good creases, but i've installed a lot of art before, NOS and repro so i didn't think too much about it. But... as i began slowly and carefully peeling the backing off, to my horror i discovered the glue and artwork were peeling off as well. At first it was ok because it was on the bottom of the CPO and would never be seen so i proceeded. It got better until i hit the complex artwork, logo and mountain range then all Hell broke loose again. If this didn't happen to me, it would have happened to ANYONE else who tired to install it. Anyway i decided that i should just peel the whole thing off to at least have something to scan as a backup (Rich at TOG has a scan already) I mounted it to poster board. Am I bummed? Yes. Was it expensive? YES!

Should i have returned it?
Not tried to install it?
Ask for a refund or partial refund?
Bend over and take it like a man?
OR?

Crease before install looks harmless:

After install attempt, brittle pieces just break off:

I don't understand why you attempted to put it on in the first place with big chunks missing and large creases. Was the person dishonest with the photos? Did they misrepresent the condition? Personally I wouldn't have bought it like that in the first place- much alone tried to apply it after I was aware of the condition.

The artwork peeling off though, is something you or the seller couldn't have anticipated. It's an old piece of artwork and this stuff happens. This looks like a bend over and take it situation, since you went ahead and tried to install the piece- despite it's cosmetic flaws. Asking for a refund initially would have been appropriate, but not afterward. I'd be wary that any older NOS CPO could do this, so I may have went with a repro instead- if a nice version was available.

Now had this been a repro, a refund after the application fiasco would have been ok- or maybe a replacement CPO from the seller instead.

I see what you are saying, but it didn't look that bad (see CPO taped in position) i've installed NOS cpos before with creases and they went on fine. It had a few very small cracks that seemed ok but turned out to be brittle once i got a few inches in. I think this is a case of bad storage (hot/cold) maybe?

+1 Well said!

That really stinks, but you took a chance with some old artwork. You have had some bad luck lately.

You have NO IDEA. :) or should i say :(

I still love this hobby, but man its frustrating as Hell sometimes. In order of least favorite aspects i would say 1: Getting PCBs/Boards to work, 2: Monitors!!! Fricken sync why don't you?? 3: Finding decent artwork or ANY artwork for that matter. 4: Installing graphics.

Here a great example of why NOS isn't always necessarily better as sometimes stated on these forums...sometimes you just take your chances..this is why repro isn't always bad thing either..especially when talking about the older glue and materials breaking down over time...

Another common thing is the pre-mask you see on some NOS sideart breaking down and then basically adhering to artwork underneath basically making it impossible to remove without damaging the art underneath...

I think that when anyone comes across NOS art they should post an inquiry to see if its been scanned for reproduction already. If it hasn't then they should get it scanned first before attempting to install it. NOS stuff is getting harder to find and it would make reproducing art easier.

I've been saying this from day 1, but most purists and other brainwashed collectors just don't wanna listen to me. NOS art sucks to apply and in most cases should not be used in a restoration. There are exceptions of course (especially if there are no good repros out there for the art you have), but really, if the NOS artwork wasn't stored flat in a verified climate and dust controlled environment for 30 years, you're taking a huge chance applying it. Even if it was I'd still probably not wanna use it. Maybe it was OK to do 15-20 years ago, when the art was only 10-15 years old, but now, it's 30 years old, brittle, the glue is drying up, it's delaminating, the creases don't always go away, etc. Every time I've applied NOS artwork (DK3 side art, PC-10 side art, Pole Position CPO, Tempest Marquee overlay) I've always had issues. Give me a good quality screened (that's the key here) repro any day. At least I know what I'm starting with and I have a good idea of what I'll have when I'm done. Save the NOS stuff for wall art. Sorry this happened to you and believe me, I know the feeling.

It was scanned, I checked. And I always scan before I apply any NOS art at great personal expense. I search high and low for this stuff and yes, incredibly hard to find. If a good quality repro existed, I wouldnt hesitate using it, but none exists at the moment.

I was happy with the Cheyenne overlay I purchased from gameongrafix *shrug*

That's the scan from my NOS Cheyenne CPO :) The sideart was also from my NOS set. Would be cool if he went ahead and did a run of the CPO.

I can definately see this being a problem. Back when I collected stickers, I got burned on some older ones that just wouldn't stick or start rolling up on themselves, or would just disintegrate.
