When does (did) the fever start to die?

I haven't looked at CL in months. Pricing in CA is so far gone that its pointless. I buy from KLOVers only.

I am on the downward side of the hobby. I much more enjoy making cabinets for others than even messing with any of my games. I make 15 different arcade cabinets, yet i don't have a single one of them in my collection. I have no room to work out of, so i am selling off about everything to turn my arcade room into a cabinet assembly/storage area.

Another reason to put it bluntly, is the woman won't shut the fuck up about it. She doesn't like arcade games, she doesn't like me in the garage, she doesn't like me working on games, she doesn't like me playing games. Well, really she just doesn't like me, but we have small kids so we stay together.

So, with any luck, by the end of the year, i will own no games. I'm sure i'll get more someday.

That's pretty sad. Everyone needs to have some kind of an outlet and working on games is a great hobby.

My wife could care less for my games but she realizes it is my hobby and not hers. I don't force her to play my games and she doesn't force me to do the things she wants to do.

The hobby hasn't died down for me just shifted a bit. I have been focusing much more in pinball in the last few years but now I find myself drifting back. I've got a Robotron cab I'm going to restore, I'm waiting on a Nintendo cab to come for a DK project and I am about to pickup an empty Moon Patrol cab so I can build myself a MP.

Most things in life go through cycles. Tides, seasons, growing old, etc. When you were a kid you went apeshit on Christmas morning. As an adult, probably not so much. Does that mean that the holiday has lost meaning? Not necessarily, it is just being viewed through a different perspective.

Using my Christmas morning analogy, I would say about myself and this hobby that I am no longer a kid anymore. I don't go and snap up anything I can find like I used to just because it is a good deal and I have "that itch." There are actually very few machines I'd go snap up right now if they popped up. But that isn't necessarily bad. I don't blow money on games that I get bored of in weeks and then can't sell. I've adjusted my thinking from being anti-multi to a 48 in 1 (and Jrok multi-Williams when I finally get it done) being big parts of my collection. They include games I wouldn't necessarily have otherwise. In short, I've gone from rotating games through to essentially whan I call my "permanent collection." Game I plan to never sell. Nicer specimens over quantity. I've "matyred" in my collection habits.

Finally, I think there is an aspect of the general environment that merits mention: the economy. I don't know how it has impacted you, but here is how it impacted me. In a timeframe of essentially 2 years, I went from having a condo worth ~$275,000 to having a condo worth ~$130,000 (I paid $199.000 and have money in on top of that in a remodel). At one point in time, there was the possibility of using the equity to upgrade from a 1 bedroom condo. Now those possibilities are gone. And since I had to have a family member cosign on my loan due to my credit history, I cannot even walk away. So for the next decade or so, I'm going to be trying to get back to square zero. That has had a severe impact on my collection habits...

kid you went apeshit on Christmad morning.

This sounds like a terrible holiday. I guess 'running away from Jesus' could be reworded as 'going apeshit'.

"Please listen to Mommy little Billy, cuz if you are naughty, Jesus will hunt you down on Christmad morning."

I don't know why, but this thread always makes me go check CL and EBay. Maybe because I'm hoping you are all serious about quiting and leaving more deals for me :)

ken

PS: More likely more deals for Dale. :(

I'm glad I'm in the Jamma generation, and glad that I don't care about cosmetics. 4 or 5 machines is all I need to play every game I've ever wanted.

I too have found myself less interested in the hobby lately. I have games that I have not played in years. I am in the middle of downsizing my collection to something that I find more manageable so I can have time for my other hobbies and interests. Just this past weekend I cleared out my gameroom. It will be turning back into a family room. It will just get more use that way. RIP Rad Arcade

THAT BLOWS.

All hobbies come and go to a point, but I'm one of those that never really gives them up even though I probably should. This is why my RX-7 sits in the garage 360 days per year and my guitars sit in their cases 364 days a year. Some day my games might be in my sub-basement, but I doubt they'll leave.

Though, I really miss my old hobbies, so I plan to get more involved as I get more free time.

I still love the hobby, probably because I have very few of the games I want.
Sure, there's MAME or XBOX live etc, but it just isn't the same.

I've been into arcade machines since the 70's, worked in the computer games industry as a programmer until 2001, and I did get a bit bored for a few years because of overkill.

Now I rarely code and play relatively few console games (coz most are just flashy with no long term playability) but I still love great, classic games. Nostalgia? Maybe, but nothing beats surviving a wave of Robotron that looked impossible or getting past the 3rd elevator stage on DK and so on. :)

I think I'll be into it forever...to some degree anyway.

Oh, and I'm gonna have to get to meets like CAX or Funspot one day coz mixing with old timers like myself is something I've really missed since arcades bit the dust. Might be easier if I didn't live in Europe though

How much do you want for the Warlords cocktail? :D

Heh... those are keepers for now. I am by no means getting out of the hobby, but I just don't play games much these days. My guess is I will probably have 8-10 games and 2-3 pins by the time I am done thinning things out a bit.

There are aspects of the hobby I really do like still. KLOV, loacal arcade parties, and last years CAX was my favorite to date.

Yup. You still have 3 items "Wanted" in your signature. ;)

It used to be that I was checking CL every couple minutes in hopes of being the first to see whatever good deal popped up.

Now, 6 years later, I own 30+ cabs, have a full gameroom and a full storage unit (and have had to store a few games at friends' or family's), hundreds of loose parts, and no space.

I've found that I still check CL, but sometimes I go days in between checking. If I see something that's a good deal, I send the e-mail, but I don't get too upset over whether I get it. I still take free cabs when offered, even though I have to scramble to figure out where the hell to put them.

I don't even think about auctions because I already have more projects than time.

I just don't seem to have that fire anymore, mainly because I am bursting at the seams with the stuff currently. Perhaps if I got a bigger place, or sold off a bunch of stuff, I'd get it back. But right now I'm just floating along, complaining about not having time or space to work on stuff, while I use my free time to screw around on the internet.

Anyone else noticed a drop-off in their hobby-drive as the accumulation grows?

yup, mine started to wane a while back , friday I have a guy picking up my last 2 working games and I am keeping a couple projects to work on when I feel like it , needed the cash for a new bass amp , its ordered and saturday morning I go choose the speaker cabinets ( 1-8x10 and a 1x15) I am choosy now about what I am picking up and am working on shit in my own time now , not feeling obligated to hit the garage right after working a full day

I thought mine had started to taper, but then today I just bought an empty Burgertime cab in Oklahoma City...

Yeah. Oklahoma City.

Heh .... I know who owned that.
Was tempted myself, especially for the price.
But like many others here, I didn't really need another "project" albeit would have been a nice title to have in an original cabinet.

The majority of my classic titles are in storage at the moment and yet I keep finding "deals" and more and more I find myself asking "why do I keep doing this?".
I also find myself giving away parts and labor to help someone else with a project machine just to justify ever even had the crap laying around collecting dust.
