Hey guys!

I've volunteered to build a couple of multicade cabinets for Fisher House here in Houston. Fisher house provides free lodging for families of veterans visiting the VA hospital.

After our discussions, I decided that a wheelchair accessible cabinet will be the best way to go. Do any of you have experience building such an animal? I need it to be pretty universal, to accommodate all or most types of wheelchairs, but still be comfortable for non-wheelchair-bound players.

Thanks for your input.

I'd make it have a 90 degree/straight up/down monitor (if LCD/LED, viewing angle has to be wide to the side and up/down).

Monitor at normal height.

The control panel I would make each player its own unit on a steel cable/wires in a covered cable. This way a wheel chair bound person can pick up their "controller" and put it on their lap. Make sure the cable is long enough that two or three wheel chairs could be around the cab. Best is control is "retractable"

Realistically, you'll just make the control panel wheel chair height (or maybe just height adjustable per player) and hang out far enough they can comfortably reach it.

These are just ideas, no experience. Someone with real experience doing this might come along and have better ideas.

Thanks. I had already considered the flat monitor, and possibly a larger than 19" monitor. I'll have to play with different configurations to see if I can find a solution works for both sitting and standing players.

Regarding the control panel, I was hoping to keep this simple with a fixed control panel they would roll under. I've considered a panel which can move up or down either manually or motorized, but that's getting complicated and potentially expensive. My first unit is going to be a very basic single player (possibly just a 60-in-1), then I'll work up from there.

I was invited to visit a local center next week where people with various disabilities gather, so I can take some measurements and try to find a happy medium which will work for most wheelchair designs.

I may have to abandon the idea that it will work for both stand up and sit down. We'll see. Thanks for your input.

My search fu is not that great, but I seem to recall that... YES somebody did build a wheel chair accessible game, on this very forum, I want to think it was about 3 years ago. Maybe somebody can find the thread.

Based on ADA requirements for a restaurant table, the control panel surface needs to be at least 28 inches, but no more than 34 inches high. There must be 27 inches of vertical clearance for knees, and 19 inch depth.

That's helpful.

Great. Thanks. Google is turning up zippo.

At least a 25" or larger. Depends on how you design the cab. The further you are away from the screen, the larger the screen needs to be.

You want a larger CP that overhangs, maybe removal of the kickplate, (or sink the kickplate deep into the cabinet) so you can roll a wheelchair up close like a chair at a desk.

Edit: I'd focus on it being wheel chair compatible. People with working legs can adapt. aka pull up a chair. ;-)

wheelchair accessible? Why don't you just build a cocktail?

The director would prefer something that looks like an arcade cabinet. I suggested the cocktail, but he didn't think it would work well. Not everyone can reach the controls, or lean forward to look down at the screen.

That's where I think I'm going with this. I don't think I can satisfy both, so I'll just concentrate on the wheelchair aspect.

This is my quick-and-dirty idea so far (dimensions are inexact):

It will have to be attached to the wall to keep it from toppling over, obviously.

This is such a great project!!!!!!!!

Man, I'm really stoked you are doing this...and I love your design idea. I think that is perfect. Can't wait for updates on this. :)

Thanks. I'll be getting started in a couple of weeks and will start a build thread.

Thank you for helping the Fisher House. That is a wonderful organization.
