What's your opinion on how to deal with this?

Finally got around to removing the badly cracked/faded veneer on this cab so I can start the process of fixing it up to finally get it out of storage. Fortunately, the veneer came off very easily with a heat gun on a low setting. Unfortunately, this is what was underneath:

You can see pencil in some spots on the wood. I'm assuming this was factory?

I wasn't going to replace the veneer, I was just going to sand and paint. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to deal with this?
 
That is pretty cool that they hid the wiring like that. But yeah, bondo is your friend here. That channel will be invisible after primer and paint.
 
I wonder if it might be much easier to use a cheap non-finish kind of veneer, even a thin plywood. Filling and sanding that much bondo and getting it just right would take me forever plus priming and re-sanding, etc. I could glue a new veneer and router that puppy in about 15 minutes.
