I'm curious how you guys break down your collection/obsession of video games and your reasons for collecting. Which do you enjoy the most of these three categories: playing your games, the look/feel/ambiance of your games, and the up-keep or fixing of games? Here's my breakdown:

Playing -- 40%
Look/Feel -- 58%
Fixing -- 2%

I've found out more recently that I like the look and feel of my gameroom more than playing the games. I guess this is because I'm a very visual person. I'm also terrible at fixing games and find no pleasure in trying to diagnose an issue or even attempting to fix the issue. I'm know there's a lot of you guys that enjoy fixing more than playing. My brain is simply not wired like that.

So, what's your % breakdown of these three criteria?

depends what the problem is,if its monitor problems I hate it. everything else i kinda like the trouble shooting.

I have to say, it's split pretty evenly for me.

Playing -- 33.3%
Look/Feel -- 33.3%
Fixing -- 33.3%

Great question, Paul. I started off really picking games just to say I had them and/or for nostalgic reasons. I also tried to stay clear of projects/non-working games as time went on. It makes sense for someone with limited space. Over the past year with a lot of personal things that happened, my taste for games and outlook on collecting has changed. The good news is that I actually play all of the games I own now.

2009 (Nintendo phase):

Play: 20%
Look: 60%
Fix: 20%

2010 to mid-2011:

Play: 50%
Look: 40%
Fix: 10%

Currently:

Play: 100%
Look: 0%*
Fix: 0%
*I love how they look too though. A bonus? :)

Those three things fluctuate for me as well. But for me like 90% is about seeing other people enjoying them. So I guess I have to lump that into the look/feel category.

Hoard, so that no one else can have them: 100%
(Time spent per week yelling "All for me!" in various evil voices: 4hrs.)

Play: 40%
Look: 20%
Fix: 40%

Although I really do like the ambiance of my little home arcade, it's more about playing and fixing games. To me, I equate the satisfaction of getting a broken game working again to the feeling I get when I set a new high score.

Play 35%
Look 64%

I HATE diagnosing issues, but if it's something relatively simple, then I don't mind fixing. I'm not very well versed in electronics, so it's all a foriegn language to me. I'm sure the longer I'm in the hobby, the more I'll learn and the more comfortable I'll become with fixing things myself. Don't think I'll ever be able to do monitors on my onw though. I more enjoy just tearing apart pieces of the cab and seeing how everything flows. How all the wires get from here to there. And then when I'm not playing, I just like to stand there and look at the games, turned off even. Just because when I was kid playing these things in the wild, I would have NEVER thought I would own one, let alone a collection.
