I'm really trying to get good at Pole Position. My high score right now is somewhere around 63,000 and some change. I am in love with the game. LOVE.

Even if we can finish the game without crashing we can't get past 64,000. What's the secret to this game? Any tips you know of besides 'don't crash'?

I imagine avoiding all the water and screeching helps a ton. How about passing too close to other cars? Does that slow you down? I'm just stumped as to where you can make up 10 seconds or more to get the World Record! :)

I filmed a game yesterday where I got 63,000 points. Not my best game but somewhat decent:

My high score is 61,000. My next highest is 56,000, so I am no help. I'd be pretty happy with 63,000 myself.

To my knowledge the speed reduction for going near cars only happens on PP2 at least I haven't noticed it on PP1, it's extremely severe on PP2 as are the puddles which are milder on 1.

Don't slow down and throw the wheel to go straight across the hairpin "Centipede" turn.

Steve, are you saying not to downshift on the hairpin turn? I watched Richie's video and he clearly is. I typically downshift and throw the wheel to the left.

Hi, Phet. 61,000 is pretty good. How many times did you crash? If you play the game enough times and you have a game with good car groupings on the hairpin turn you can easily get past 61k. Keep trying, brother Phet!

One thing I never understood about this game is the fact that you can start in the Pole Position and be in front of all the other cars that started the race, yet on the first lap of the game you start passing other "phantom" cars. Where the hell do those cars come from???

I am a big fan of classic arcade games but when it comes to driving games I always say get a newer game like RUSH 2049 that can be linked so you can play against another person.

Yeah, I always thought that was funny too! There are a lot of cars on that race track!!! :)

Pole Position for life!

Yup and I don't touch the shift ever except when starting the race. Use the pedal instead. I'm not sure if RK does or not, I don't recall him ever using the shift since he plays with one hand that would be impossible.

If you watch his video (I think you were there) you can hear the downshifting on the hairpin. Maybe I am imagining it.

Anyways, I'll try playing without shifting ever. Thanks for the advice!

I've also seen Richie play and never seen him use the shifter other than the start. I think what you are hearing is him letting off the accelerator and then stomping back on it.

The WR on that game might never be beaten. I think it's indisputable that it happened but it seems like it was a one in a million fluke because people have been trying to beat it for nearly 30 years and no one has succeeded. Too bad it wasn't videotaped. I think I read somewhere that it was set on a cockpit machine and that the whereabouts of the machine are currently unknown. Would be interesting to have it surface and see if there was anything unusual about the boardset.

Chunk: 1632. What's that? A year?
Mouth: No, it's your top score in Pole Position.

The last time I played one was at Flynn's Arcade (RIP) at Disney's CA Adventure and it was cool. Though, my generation's Pole Position was Outrun, so I don't have the nostalgia that comes with playing it. I think my top score was 1632. ;)

There were four at the last CAX but they kept breaking down (surprise, surprise) and were used mainly for the tournament. Our very own TronGuy won.

I owned a project Pole Position but I knew I was never going to get to it and sold it/gave it away. However, after watching the video I am semi-interested in getting another one just to become decent at the game.

The only driver I have right now is single Indy 500 which I am trying to get rid of for $100. Not a single taker for it either. Indy 500 is a pretty decent driver - you can set it up for a 20 lap race which takes about 15 minutes. Plus you can swap out two other driving games - Over Rev (yes it sucks) and Touring Car Championship (some don't like it but it's actually a pretty decent game). Plus it is medium resolution, stereo sound, and has force feedback. And it has a couple of different tracks to choose from.

I would say totally do it. To me Pole Position is more like a true sport. You have a finite amount of time to do your very best then it just ends. I just love that aspect of it. It also helps that the controls of the game are just so refined. You feel in such control of the game and that if you screw up it's clearly your own fault. I can't say enough about the game and I also have Outrun and have owned Turbo too. Pole Position is #1 to me.

Word. I say PP (1 and not 2) and Monaco GP handle the best in terms of driving game control.

Great video, hoping to get mine put back together soon. Lets keep the chat going guys !
