From side scrollers to shumps to fighting to driving to platforms and many more, there are lots of different types of arcade games.

Just curious what your favorite TYPE of game is?

:D

My favourite type of game is arcade!

To be serious, it would be a tough call between fighting games, side scrolling beat em ups and shmups. I love all 3 genres.

Driving/shooting/other types of games are still cool, but when I was younger and arcades were common, I'd gravitate to fighting games first and it's hard to beat KI/MK/SF/Tekken.

The local fish and chippery had a cabinet that changed between various side scrollers (Final Fight and Knights of the Round generally) and shmups have always been around, though I enjoy them much more these days.

I got my start playing Atari 2600. It only had one button of course except Omega Race with the adapter grip. Anyway, I never really developed a skill set for more buttons and combos like fighting games. I like shooting games the best.

I bet there's going to be some age-related trends going on here. I grew up in the 70s and 80s so my least favorite are the fighters and side-scrolling punch everyone games. After Double Dragon, I completely lost interest.

It's tough to pick a favorite but I think the best ones are the ones that have some unique creativity to them. Bomb Jack is a level game, but the gravity makes it super cool. Mappy is a level game, but the scoring and scrolling makes it so fun.

Pepper II is another maze game, but eeeeeasily my favorite because of the play and the 4 simultaneous mazes to complete.

But in general I like games that didn't fit a genre like I, Robot (yes it's sometimes a shooter) and Zookeeper and Tapper.

That said, I should admit that I also really like sports games :)
By the mid-80s, the games became too formulaic for my tastes.
