In the spirit of other folks here who've been known for posting interesting discussion topic/questions (many of which I've enjoyed), I had one that I've been meaning to toss out there, which I was reminded of during a recent game of Millipede.

In many games, there are little moments of achievement that are especially satisfying. Ones where you do that hard-to-hit thing, or accomplish a certain action flawlessly, which give you that little special 'buzz'.

For example, in Millipede when you shoot the DDT and the entire millipede runs straight into it, ending the level. Or in Battlezone, when you nail that extreme-distance saucer shot.

I'm not talking about larger-scale achievements (like kill-screening DK or Pac-Man), but the shorter, instant-gratification kind, that most players can experience from time to time.

What are some of your favorite 'satisfying gameplay' moments?

DK when you get wild or funky barrel combos or some random fireball weirdness and have to improvise a way out.

Always fun to survive a situation that doesnt seem survivable on that game.

It happens more often then anyone would like since the game is pretty random and seems almost possessed at times.

ah, I finally got one recently that falls into this category. Though most probably have never even seen it.

During the bonus level on kozmik krooz'r, I finally completed it (and won a free life). I also happened to break the world record during that game. Prior to that I thought it was impossible.

Every time you clear the wave in robotron. That perimeter flashing sounds awesome and means that you have advanced to the next screen.

Finishing Pole Position without crashing. I've only done it a couple of times.

getting the galaxian 800 point hat trick...

Perfect score on a Galaga bonus round.

Yeah, this is one of the classic ones. (Even better if it's the second or third bonus round.)

I was going to say the same for the Gyruss bonus. The sound that gets played for a perfect score on the Gyruss bonus rounds is one of my favorite arcade sounds of all time.

Cranked up loud, and stereo, it gives me chills every time.

#1 Defender - When you have collected a whole stack of humanoids and drop them all at once, lots of bonus points & great sense of accomplishment :)

#2 Skykid - when you drop the bomb from great height and precisely nail the target..

#3 Galaga - As others have said... the perfect bonus round.

Perhaps this is too "long term" to fit your definition, but scoring 337,000 points on my first car in Spy Hunter sure made me proud.

+1 for perfect bonus round on Galaga, ANDjumping a fireball on DK...

For me:
- Completing the four different levels in DK
- A valid hammer throw in Track and Field when you max the yellow speed bars
- Completing the first level of Looping

  • Beating some adult at SF II. I was a kid and he was mad that a kid was beating him. He called me a "button masher". He seemed like he was overly into being good at games, taking it too seriously, and it crushed him that he ran into a kid that was playing more casually for fun that he couldn't beat and was trying to play it off as I was just mashing buttons and getting lucky, lol. Um....You have to use precise timing to win at SF...just mashing buttons won't do you any good, lol

  • Beating R-Type with zero deaths/getting over a million points.

when you're 6 and you beg your mom for a couple quarters and she hooks you up :)

always felt like i'd won the lottery when she reached into her purse, pulled out a couple shiny quarters, and dropped 'em in my waiting hands
