Anyone know? If it's history, where is the best place to get mame ROMs? Thanks for any help.

the crash of '84

regarding all the home computers, specifically the Commodore 64 and Atari 800XL, software programmers were getting screwed because the games were being illegally copied. The floppy disks at the time were preferred to carts as they are cheaper to manufacture and have higher storage capacity, plus games could use more than 1 disk, that and convenient saving options made gaming on home computers so popular that consoles (ColecoVision, Intellivision, and Atari's own 5200 system) were dying out.

Fact Is... You invest hundreds of hours into coding a game and naturally expect to be well paid for your labor and effort, then you sell only a handful of disks that get copied over and over and over again, where's your paycheck?
and... do you feel like writing another game now?
 
I had a C64 then and I never remember any crash, The European market had hard core piracy, but they kept churning out killer games, and quality titles still came out in the U.S.A. too.

I was just a kid, of course, and had no money, so yeah, I copied a lot of games, but I did buy SOME too.

BTW let me mention one other thing. Most games really don't spend much time being played. Out of 100 games let's say, there's probably only 2 or 3 that really hook you and you play for any length of time.

Lemme see... 1984.... Was that before or after ELITE came out? Wow, what a game. Awesome. I think we literally poured months into that game.

Who remembers Jumpman for the C64? Also a killer game. Became a super pro at that.

Earliest game I remember being addicted to on a computer was "Stellar 7" on the Apple II. I never had an Apple II, but the school did, and someone had the Steller 7 disk, and at lunchtime, I played the heck out of it.
 
There are still sites that have every rom, well almost every rom, supported by Mame.

www.mameworld.net is probably the best. Downloading sucks though - takes forever.

Mame.dk was the ultimate. Its a shame they had to remove their roms but I understand the copyright holders' right to protect their interests.....even if those interests are way outdated and don't have a snowball's chance in hell of making future profit.

So from what's been said above - piracy ironically HELPED sales of C64/Amiga/Amstrad etc...

In a similar circumstance, do you think that maybe PS1's sales were assisted by the abiltiy to pirate software? I've often wondered what percentage of PS1's sales were primarily due to the ability to copy games from Blockbuster. If they had a realy problem with piracy, they would have prevented video stores from hiring games wouldn't they?

I reckon this had a detrimental effect on SEGA and to a somewhat lesser extent to Nintendo. Ironically, Piracy helped Sony, and at the end of the day, Piracy sells hardware, and that's what the SONYs and M$'s want isn't it. Conversely, it's obviously not good for the game developers though, but piracy-rate is always relative to sales of a respective game isnt' it? A highly pirated game will always be a good seller anyhow.

I had an Intellivision, and was sorry to see the end of its era due to the computer explosion, but such is life I guess.
 
Although I have to say that piracy ultimately contributed in no small way to the Amiga's demise - that, and Commodore's tardiness in delivering a better Amiga model, and total failure to market the machine to businesses.

See the problem is that the business model for a games console company these days is to break even or make a small loss on the console itself, and make money on the software.
