whats the deal with using a tv as an arcade monitor?

I am sorry if this is silly, I know this has come up before but no idea what to even search. Can an old tv be used as an arcade monitor? I remember reading only certain models? I have like 3 19" tvs im not using, would be cool if I could make a cabinet for one.

You could get an RGB-to-NTSC converter and just mount the TV in there.

Or find compatible tubes in old TV's and swap them into arcade monitors with bad burn-in. There are a couple threads about this in the Monitor section...

 Totally forgot about the monitor section. very sorry haha

The convertor you mention, your talking about jroks?

That is one of them. there are other makers and suppliers too. haven't checked prices on them, but I think jrok's is competitive...

It would be real cool to crack open a TV and track down where you can directly inject RGB and sync signals.

THAT would be cooler than any converter. You might need to invert or buffer or level-adjust the signals, but I'll bet it could be done.

Going back to the sofa and have another thought experiment...

The converters are pretty cool. But the TV needs to have atleast an S-video plug in available, other wise it looks like hell. I used one for my 27" TV and it looks beautiful. I venture to guess though, if you were trying to use it on much newer titles like CPS3 stuff, the pixels would show much heavier (requiring you to run component cables instead).

well the problem being my television only has the cable connection, but I have rf modules which would give me the component cables which I could use, how bad would it look for golden tee? or mortal kombat? I wanna build a cabaret cabinet and I have this monitor sitting here about to go into the trash, so I thought why not use it and either make a cabaret with a trackball or with mortal kombats layout. I have all the other parts (power supply, harness etc) just no monitor

No joke, running anything less than S-video looks like pig-vomit. I could maybe see it being OK on something like Ms.pacman, Space invaders, or ...well... actually, they'd look like shit too. S-video, homie. S-video.

When I bought mine, it was hooked up to Street Fighter 2 thru component cables. I could see what was going on, but it seriously looked all garbled up and wavy.

your telling me s video is better than component? I thought it was the other way around, or is it only cause there older games?

or am I thinking component when I really have composite?

what if I use this. http://www.uxsight.com/product/9475/goldenplated-male-rca-male-svideo-converter-cable-adapter.html

or OR .. http://www.telesats.com/marcheelectroniqueonline/images/BOXOEM31.jpg

I think you're thinking of composite (RCA jack). Component is the newer stuff like computers and LCD TV jacks and such.

Component> S-video> composite

As for the other stuff, no idea, way over my head. I'll just tell you from what I've seen. S-video is great.

What about using the universal chassis from 8 liners on the TV tube. I need something to convert medium resolution to work on an older 27" TV. I haven't heard anyone using medium Res on a TV tube, but I'd like to try it.

I haven't come across a universal chassis that will handle Med. Res., if you find one let me know... my Race Drivin' has slight burn-in...
