What's the BEST TV to play old school games on??

I'm guessing standard NES controllers/guns work with that TV? I'm on the lookout for one now (DAMN YOU KLOV!)

Yep, they do work. It's just nice to have the set to match the TV. They can fetch a bit on eBay by themselves. Fortunately, however, you can sometimes get them cheap, as a lot of people think they are cheap third party controllers. They are just standard NES controllers in a different color, with a different sticker set.

And as far as I know, no gun was produced in the TV colors. That is on my to paint list.

Nothing says awesome old school like a Woodgrain 13" RCA XL100 baby...

thanks for posting those pics! very cool man. in that first pic, at the very bottom it looks like its got feet on the corners sticking out... is that all part of the base of the unit? or is that a seprate piece on the bottom? very cool part of nes history....

just curious if you got yours on ebay or got lucky at the stores/swaps?? very cool find indeed, thanks for sharing.

im gonna have to keep my eye out for one of these :)

These are the only pics I have of it right now. We are in the process of packing, so it's a little cluttered. Where it says Sharp is a panel covering the volume, channel and other buttons. In the middle bottom, there is a door that says "game" on it. That door is where the NES carts load in to. The insides are a bit different than your standard NES, too. It does use the standard 72 pin connector, so it can get the flashing issue, but it's easy enough to replace. The main board itself is much larger than a standard NES board.

The two buttons on the bottom left are power and reset for the NES. Unlike the standard NES, they are not spring loaded buttons, but rather more like a TV face button.

and it comes with black controllers:

Mine is missing the remote control that came with them originally. But I have a standard universal programmed to it, and when I hit source the NES turns on or off... very cool.

Usually the feet are broken off, or the doors are missing. One in that condition but still working would probably run about $150, unless you find one "in the wild" where someone doesn't know what they have.

The entire thing is one piece. the feet do not come off. that is why you see them broken off so frequently.

I got mine from a store. They had it on display and I had never seen one before then. The store was a few hours away, but I was making a deal with the owner for something else. A few months later I contacted him to see if he still had the unit. He did, so I traded him a bunch of my extra games and systems for it. I gave up a lot towards it, more than the TV was probably worth, but it was all stuff I had accumulated at low prices.

I have 3 27" crt tvs in my basement arcade, a Sony, Panasonic, and a Toshiba. All from like 1999 and the Toshiba has the best picture. The tube is in perfect convergence and midnight black when off. It also has component video inputs (480i only). The Sony is decent, and the panasonic is the wost of the 3.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture "wow it's feet are still intact". I have had a couple of them over the years and never had them with intact feet, there is always at least one broken off or at the very least severely cracked.

Yep, I was fortunate to find one with all four feet in tact, and not damaged in the least.

The only thing you could consider damaged would be the clasp on the game door. It works, but holds very loosely, so the door can fall open with a breeze.

That's minor compared to how the majority of the ones I have seen are. I have been tempted to track down another one to put next to my SNES store display but there are so many other things out there that I just can't justify spending money on essentially a NES (which I have many of in storage). Now If I did happen to stumble upon a famiconbox cheap enough I would seriously consider getting one. It would fit perfectly in an arcade setting as you paid to play. :D I would just have to track down a supply of 100yen coins.

I've seen a couple of these at thrift stores over the years, but that was long before I had money and room to collect stuff like this.

That model is far more uncommon than the one I have. On the Nintendo Forum, there is a list of about 20-30 owners of the NES TV, but only 1-2 are that model. (and most of the others are missing feet anyway)

Jeez. I suppose the ones I saw were either fakes or possibly just red TVs. The time frame when I saw what I saw was long before I knew of that specific model.

Otherwise...

Without looking it up, I'm assuming it's a rear projection, based on the manufacturer, and size. Light guns do not work on them, sucks. They do make guns that can work on them, but they require an infrared tracking device. That's what some shooters that have massive screens use.

Great Thread ! I am currently looking for a nice BIG gaming TV for a room I am setting up for classic gaming and my collection. Any recommendations or tips for what to look for?

I have always used sony commercial tv sets. I have pvm2030, 2530, 3230 and 2950q .

The best that sony made is the pvm2950q. 600 lines, it has s-video, componet, and rca.

Ive heard a lot of good about Sony's sets. I am keeping an eye out locally for a nice big one.

Speaking of size..... What is the biggest common size for a CRT set? I think I have seen up to 37" CRT's. I would prefer a CRT over a Rear Projection due to the light gun issue.

Oh well it is still a great tv for most stuff imo and for the price I got it I can't really complain lol

first 2 numbers is the size for the pvm series. So pvm2950q is 29".

they made several 13" models, but I have never owned one, so I can't say if it has the same digital controls.

here are some 13" models off the website. The 2030, 2530, and the 3230 are older models. I have 2 2950's and 1 2030 that I use regularly. The 3230 (needs caps) and the 2530 are in storage.. I also use 2 amiga 1084s monitors.. For my computers, I use 2 eizo(nanao) 21" f980's and a samsung 32" GP1U.
