I'm looking into getting a 4 slot Neo Geo Machine. What titles were popular?

Who cares what was popular, get what you like. Find someone local with a multi cart 125in 1 and play a bunch of them and see what you like.

Or, just buy a multicart yourself and enjoy!

Or, just go the route that I did, buy cheap games first to see what you like, and buy games based on what you enjoy. I like football, so i found a football frenzy.

If you don't like 2D fighters (and since you haven't played the Neo, I'm guessing that you do NOT), then why ask? It's hard to recommend good games for you when this system's top games were all fighters.

My top list is Metal Slug 3, Mark of the Wolves, King of Fighters 98.... there are tons more, but those are the top three, for me. Two of which, are fighters. So, good luck. Great system, but if it's passed you by this long, I'm not sure you will find the enjoyment out of it the way you could have 10-15 years ago. :(

The Metal Slug series and Shock Troopers 1 & 2

For me that's it :)

Spoken like a true non fighter fan.

It looks like most of the games are 2d fighters. I see some ship side scrolling shooters too. Which (aircraft) SS shooters are good? I like the Metal Gear series. And Bust a Move too. Is the 125's in one exact replication of the originals games? The 60 in 1 and 19 in 1's are horrible. I don't have any 90's games in my collection except a Multi-Mortal Kombat. This will help round out my collection for the other generation of gamers. I hope this helps my vague post.

The multi game in ones on the Neo Geo are mostly perfect. There are a few exceptions that drive me nuts. Some games are missing some midi instruments in the music, making the music and sounds a little stupid. But, many many not know anything is wrong if they haven't played the games before. Samurai Shodown 2 is an example of the music being messed up.

Blazing Star is pretty cool for a bullet hell shooter. Baseball Stars 2 is awesome for an old game. But again, it's mostly a system for beating friends up with.

Actually that's not really true. I was just more of a Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 kinda guy. Never got into the neo geo fighters like Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters, Fatal Fury.... They just weren't my thing.

I do love me some shock troopers though lol. The NeoGeo has a little something for everybody

A lot of the early titles aspire to be alot as well, such as magician lord and nam 1975, those are some of my favs

While not a big fan of the fighters, I love the Neo's puzzle games. Strange, I know. Neo seems to be a fighters machine

Magical Drop 2&3
Money Puzzle exchanger
Oh, and Bust a move!

It is riduculous to say that the Neo Geo was all fighting games! There were way more non fighting games. Maybe like 5% were fighting games!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Neo_Geo_games

Your math is horrible. 5% of 157 would suggest there are only 7 or 8 fighters. The King of Fighters series (only one of many fighting series on the system) had no less than 9 games by itself! So, yes.... about 6 or so percent of the games were KOF games. Not to mention 8 Fatal Fury games, 6 Samurai Shodowns, 3 Art of Fightings, 2 Last Blades, and then the countless figthing games made by other people (Waku Waku 7, Double Dragon, 2 Breakers games, Ninja Masters, Matrimelee, 3 count bout, AODK, 4 World Fighters games... etc). Just counting the ones I rambled off the top of my head alone, that's a total of 46. There's more than THAT, but 46 out of 157 is already 30%. Let's face it, a lot of those other games are Japanese games that never came over here like Mahjohng and crap like that.

So you're right, there's a lot that aren't.... the first part of the Neo's life was strictly NOT fighters, but at the end? Fighters up the ass, and almost nothing else. All thanks to the big Street Fighter boom. And, personally speaking, the first games that came out for the system were pretty crappy.

EDIT: My mistake KOF had 10 games, not 9.

Top Hunter is a great one that most people have never heard of. It has hidden levels you can play to earn more health, points, and extra lives.

Beyond that... any of the Metal Slug series, Shock Troopers 2nd Squad, and Nighmare in the Dark are excellent games.

Oh, and you can't have a Neo Geo without having Puzzle Bobble. :)

Games that haven't gotten any/much mention in this thread:

Neo Turf Masters.
Viewpoint
Zed Blade
Twinkle Star Sprites
Magical Drop 2/3
Aero Wings
Strikers Plus

Also, anytime someone starts a "I want a neo-geo but I don't play many fighters" thread, it is also good to come up with a list of the best/most accessible fighters.
In that case, I recommend:

Garou(Fatal Fury), Mark of the wolves
Last Blade 1/2
King of fighters 98/99 or 2002.

Nightmare in the Dark
Ghostlop (really love this game, worthwhile tracking down/ or have someone make you a copy. Can't believe this never saw release)

NEO Mr. Do! is a lot of fun...

But really, just fire up MAME and take a look for the NEO GEO games you find interesting. There are some obscure titles that you might find you like that others don't.

I think he meant only 5% of the library contains GOOD fighting games.

Ba boom psssht!
