What would cause the top of a ROM chip to blow off?

Hey guys,

Got a Dig Dug project last week. Looking at the PCB closer just about the entire top of ROM 2B/C is blown off. Could somebody have plugged the board in backwards? I powered it up and there is a picture but it is garbled with characters and there is a constant audio hum.

Wondering if the board might be fried or if maybe a simple ROM replacement might work.

I've seen 2716 EPROMs glow red through the erase window when installed backwards....guess the top might blow

It's obvious. The pressure was too much for the chip!

LOL

Too much voltage , reverse voltage, old age, blow to the chip itself....pick one. :)

Internal shorts cause the chip to suddenly heat up. That thermal shock & outgassing from the chip will blow the top.

Not be completely useless, but that was a short.

I - when I first started over fifteen years ago- tried to solder a Space Duel PCB, I set it on my metal stovetop - not thinking and blew a few ram chips.

It's a short.

I've seen ROMs with popped tops before. It usually is the result of plugging it in backwards. Get a new set of ROMs burned and try it again. If you are seeing video, even garbled, the board shouldn't be completely blown.
