What will my first non-Nintendo game be?

I had a conversation with Arcadejunkie last week about possibly moving away from collecting just Nintendo and looking to add some different games to my collection. Although this won't happen anytime soon, it got me thinking of what I would get next. I know for everyone it's really about personal preference, what the game means to you, and/or your interest in actually playing it.

It would be tough for me. Going through my teen years in the 90s meant most arcade games were from the "beat'em up/slash'em up" genre (Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Rastan, Final Fight, TMNT, X-Men, Trojan, etc.) Although these were fun at the time for me, I was just playing some of these games with a buddy of mine on MAME last night and it got boring pretty quickly. Maybe I'm now used to games that are simple and challenging as opposed to mindless. We ended up playing NBA Jam for a good 2 hours. Hehe.

With that said, I think my next game I would consider getting would either be Street Fighter II: World Warrior (I have a lot of memories playing this game with my older brother and him kicking my butt) or Willow (A local candy shop had this game when I was a kid and I had a lot of fun playing it since I liked the movie. The concept of getting coins and buying items along the way was pretty cool at the time).

Would that be weird to have either of these sitting next to my eventual Nintendo row?

I'd say no its not weird, get games that you enjoy playing and don't worry what looks good next to what. I filter mine to locations where themes or cabs match up, but I don't worry if two totally opposite ends of the spectrum are sitting next to eachother either. I've got such a wild variety I'd say most don't match up with the others but I've never heard anyone ever make mention of it...

Good point. And who's to say I'd stop at getting "just one more" game. :)

Anyone actually own a dedicated Willow here? I'd love to see a picture. I haven't seen once since I was a kid and the KLOV photo is shameful.

Ha, Jess,
good luck at stopping, once you start getting games there is no "end"
Unless you run outta room and even then you'll try to make just one more fit... :)

I'd think besides SF2's, atari sytem 1 and 2 games would be up your alley. paperboy, indiana jones, roadblasters, marble madness, road runner, championship sprint are all great interchangeable games. But don't forget about the dedicated, artsy cabs of that time as well. 720, toobin, xybots, blasteroids, etc are all great examples of the uniques from that era. Would look good with your other colorful cabs.

Taylor/ArcadeJunkie has my Blasteroids cabinet down there he could sell ya' - I loved that game when I was younger, it was our generations Asteroids since all those were dead and sitting in leaky warehouses by the time I was hitting the arcades daily. I was sad to leave it at his place, but health and safety on my trip was my primary concern...

For sure. Championship Sprint was actually at that same candy store at one point. If I remember correctly, he then swapped it out with a 3P Ironman Stewart. Now he has neither one of them, but he does have a Crazi Taxi. CS would definitely be on my list of games to own someday. Thanks for the reminder, Gozer!

Yeah, you made one heck of a trip! I remember Taylor mentioning the Blasteroids. I can't pick up any new games anytime soon, but it's good to know there's guys I can turn to for inspiration and/or games. :)

You're really on the right track man. There are many different angles in this hobby. Some specialize, like your initial Nintendo only collection, or maybe the full Mortal Kombat set; some get games based on the best deals in the area; some start with one idea and move to something else. My preference has been what you're talking about: get the game(s) that you remember playing back when you hung out at the arcades with your friends. Its those games that still cause me to say: "I can't believe I have that in my garage" just about every time I walk by my collection.

SF2 is a great one. I'd love to have one some-day, but can't decide if I want to combine it with more fighters in some sort of MAME or multi-cab, or just go for a SF2-Turbo dedicated.

I would definitely try to go dedicated. I don't know. I mean, I have the game on MAME and I have the SF Anniversary Collection for Xbox. So there's really more to it than just being able to play the game. To say to myself "I own SFII:WW in a dedicated cabinet with the crazy pink/yellow/purple artwork" just seems more meaningful like you said. Haha. Thanks Jeff.

Yeah, Jeff. I agree with Eseyo. Stay dedicated. SF2 turbo? Hmmm. I'd go with Super SF2 Turbo, if I were you. You'd get the basic SF2 game, but with the 4 extra fighters, same style graphics and levels. However, being that it was CPSII rather than jamma, you'd get alot of other great fighters to swap. (Darkstalkers franchise, X-men COTA, Marvel Franchise, SF alphas, and so on.)

I think I want my next cab to be a Multi-Williams.
I might have to get rid of my Area51/Maximum Force to fit it in the house,no way I will ever get rid of my DK.

Hey if your up my way feel free to stop by and play some games and see if any jump out at u! I have all the system 1 and system 2 cabs lined up and a 720! Star wars is also a great game that might add some diversity to you collection. Just a thought.

Seems, like most of the games you like are jamma games. I would say go with a nice street fighter. You can then buy all the boards you want(willow, tmnt, double dragon, ect and just plug and play).

I thought Willow was only a conversion kit. The KLOV picture is a Buck Rogers conversion, and the one at my arcade back in the day was a Super Cobra conversion. Every other Willow I've seen has been a conversion as well.

Unless you played a generic Dynamo cab that had Willow installed. You could make the case for that being a dedicated Willow.

Kyle

Thanks for the offer Joe! Yes, Star Wars would be sweet, but I've never seen one go for under 1000. Maybe when I get rich in the future. Haha. MrBill, swapping out boards is definitely a cost cutting solution. It's like having a Vs. cab and switching out PCBs. Scum, NeoGeo 4-slot is definitely on my list. Thanks for the input guys! :)

I would definitely buy the games you remember playing the most. Now that my garage is filling up with those, I am much happier with it. Buy the games for you. If friends don't want you to get rid of one that you don't play much, tell them to buy it from you. I kept my Ridge Racer way too long because of that. The best part is, DK is always available to play. I can hardly ever talk anyone into trying it. :)

this arcade addiction never ends..... first you start with the nintendo row.... then comes the bally midway row..... then comes the atari row..... then you get a lil burned out on arcades and you decide to jump into pinballs! muahhhhh........

Yeah, I'm finishing up my Nintendo row, but already working on my Williams row. Then it'll probably be on to Atari as I already have one of those too. Pinball, is an ongoing quest as well :)
