What was the best "kit only" game?

Street Fighter II series, definitely!
Arkanoid: Revenge of DOH, a close second.

Soul Calibur II hands down, especially the "dedicated conversion", AKA Konami 4-player (so many of them became SCIIs, and the CPO/controls was practically made for them).

Definitely Arkanoid

i don't think black widow was kit only.. i am sure some gravitars left the factory as black widows, and those would be dedicated?

Edit:

Black widow 1550

atari did them to gravitars they could not sell. If it was a factory deconversion after they were assembled or something they decided on the line to change, I don't think its known. But I would call it a kit as every black widow has gavitar art under it..

Sort of the same thing red baron to all the BZ they could not sell. They tried open face and then kit to red baron.. But they also made a dedicated upright and a cockpit, so it does not fit the criteria..

As for the game that killed the most classics, Arkanoid is a good choice for the vertical games(I think mr do would give it a run for the money). But I think rastan killed lots of horizontal classics..

I would not thought it possible to put a vertical monitor into an I-robot..

Very small distinction, as I'm sure just taking the kit numbers into account, it's the hands down SFII is the winner as far as sales....

But were there were no dedicated SFII's?

I read the OP as what's your personal favorite kit "only" game.

Empire strikes back?

Marble madness.. It's a "kit"
So would be Road runner, Paperboy and road runner.

But it's a kit for it's own cab so that wouldn't work.

ESB was a kit....

Interesting read on Timber...Never knew that before!

I'll add 1943 to the mix....

You could say system 1 +2 was a kit, but those were done up at factory to be a certain game. So they actually ran paper boys champ sprint, road runners..

ESB was a kit only..

as for timber, it probably would be in the same class as black widow, factory kit.

street fighter 1, street fighter II, street fighter II CE and super street fighter(probably a few more as I don;t follow SF series) would not qualify as there were production cabinets to all of them.

a few more good possibly kit only games: strikers series and raiden series

Looking at this solely from the point of view of how many conversions I have seen at auctions over the last 13 years:

- Street Fighter II
- Arkanoid
- Mr Do!
- Vs.
- Rastan

All of these were big sellers for their respective manufacturers.
