What was or is top gun: Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat series?

So I'm in the middle of helping my brother restore his dynamo HS-5 to a SF:CE dedicated cabinet. When a few of my firends were like. "What happened to the MK1 that was in there? You should restore it to a MK cabinet instead. (Now ok, everyone has their opinion, but when they said the following that had me laughing) Mortal Kombat was waaaaaaay beter bro."

Then we got into a long discussion and a few friends of mine who all argued to me and my brother that Mortal Kombat was a better and more successful series! As a person who likes to use facts in arguments, I went and compared each SF game to the then current running MK game at the time. Found it would be fair to compare MK1 to SF2 ww, MK2 to SF2'HF/CE etc. etc.

Now... I love both series, but no Fighting game or game from 1991 on comes close to the SF2 series in my book. Now that says a lot since I love and own more Tekken series items than SF. But SF2 holds that special place that no game can't for me.
MK series was always running a close second to SF for many years.

One thing that MK did do better was their movies.
I read how someone said: "Man, I laughed when I first saw the Street Fighter Champion Edition commercial for Sega. You know, the one where the mall cop is walking through the game store late at night. Well, I thought it was total BS how the fist came out of the SF box and grabbed the MK box and crumpled it up. MK was way better, I mean... It had BLOOD SF didn't have blood, or fatalities!"

He was wrong about the blood. LOL But I respected his opinion.

Now decades later, MK and SF are now back in competition after so many bad MK sequels. I'm quite impressed with MK, and it's time that they got their head of their ass. Yet...SF hasn't skipped a beat.

What do you guys think? I know there is MK fans that feel SF was a close second. If your game room allowed room for only one of SF machine or MK machine, which one would get the spot?

I would take SF2' HF hands down over any SF or MK machine.

Street Fighter Nation.

As a fight game fan, I kind of feel like I should have at least one MK...but that would leave less room for Capcom games. Forget that noise.

Yes so much so, that is why it sold so well in Japan, the home of the beat em up, where across all the released games it sold barely 75,000 units... or the game was not well recieved when it was tested, although NBA Jam did better...

Or where no single MK game has sold more then 2.5m copies worldwide where as SF2 on the Super NES sold in excess of 6 million copies. Even taking the Genesis / Megadrive sales of MK1, MK2 and MK3 it barely makes it over 6 mllion copies, where as SF2, SF2Turbo and Super SF2 on the SNES / SFC is in excess of 12 million copes.

Now the only reason MK sold well was because of the gore and violence, strip it away and it is a very weak game compared to SF, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, etc...

If I had to choose a SF game then I would choose SF Zero / Alpha Three with SF3 Third Strike a close second and if I wanted to play as Sub Zero then I would get a NBA Jam TE machine :D

Killer Instinct actually wins this fight if you ask me, tho i'm a huge MK fan, after UMK3 i lost interest as the game fell hard. at that point i actually moved to Marvel Vs. Capcom as it was more fun than MK4 and oh i can't forget Tekken Tag and Tekken 4 those were absolutely awesome games.

Putting MK1 up against SF2:ww MK definitely wins, SF2:WW was so choppy and laggy while MK1 was much smoother.

I own UMK3 and SF2:ww and Marvel Vs. Capcom. UMK3 gets the most love right now since KI is out for repair, while SF2:ww i played for all of 30minutes before i got so fed up with the choppy game play. Marvel Vs. Capcom is so much more fun than most of the SF's i've played.

Virtua Fighter was never visually appealing to me but i did dump some quarters in it back in the day, it was ok but i couldn't get past the boxes. Tekken did a much better job IMO.

If we wanted to talk about the MK or SF movies..... they were all terrible.

also i'll add the cabinet design for MK machines IMO was much better, there are only a couple models of dynamo cabs that i actually like, and the capcom big blue...... reminds me of shrek, it's HUGE! and kinda ugly.

My game room will always have room for as many MK style cabs as possible. and i already have a marked off spot for a dedicated KI once it get's here.

KI FOR LIFE

For me, Street Fighter 2 beats Mortal Kombat overall as a series. And those cheesy digitized graphics in Mortal Kombat remind me of Pit Fighter.

For those who like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2, just get Street Fighter 2: The Movie arcade game. And I apologize if I insulted anyone.

Back in the day,I had the opinions that your friends do,that MK was #1 and SF #2.When I got a little older,I reevaluated the situation and realized that the SF series is way better than the MK series. Don't get me wrong,I love both series. But if I had to choose between SF and MK,the choice is easy....Street Fighter all the way. It has better gameplay, plays way smoother, and has a better cast of characters than MK. The fatalities are cool, but more of a novelty than anything. Wish they'd ditch the babalities and the other crap,I never liked those.

Favorite SF - Probably SFA 3.
Favorite MK - Mortal Kombat II

personally SF is top of my list compared to MK. I like the different button layout of MK and the "block button" it was different from the SF series. it was a short lived difference, went back to SF not to long after. MK2 def was one of my fav in the MK series UMK3 second. I like my fighters each are different and i enjoy them all.

Here is what i have:

SF:WW......UMK3.............Samuri Shodown I, II, IV
SF:alpha....Tekken TAG....King of fighters 94,92
SF:three....Tekken 2........World heroes 1, 2
MVC..........Darkstalkers
MVC2
Marvel super heroes
XMEN:COTA
Xmen vs Street Fighter

As you can see i like my fighters but always switching boards out depending on the mood. STREET FIGHTER series hands down wins!

Always up for a NEW CHALLENGER!

Hands down... the Street Fighter series... I think it is the most successful fighting series ever, which is saying a lot. Since Capcom released the first game in August 1987, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter#cite_note-ignreview-1the series had had total home software sales of 31 million units,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter#cite_note-2 anhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_arcade_cabinetd arcade cabinet sales of over 500,000 units accounting for more than $1 billion in revenue,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter#cite_note-Guiness-77-3 qualifying for the list of best-selling video game franchises, with its best-selling entry Street Fighter II exceeding $1.5 billion in revenue.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter#cite_note-Kirsh-228-4 The franchise has enjoyed significant success all around the world. {NUFF SAID}

MK is a great series as well and I am a fan...

man...thats a tough call....they are both good games, but Street Fighter has more depth and technique than MK. On the other hand, MK is much cooler...the screams, the fatalities, characters, it's just badass. I love them both...tough choice. (I own a Street Fighter II )

Mortal Kombat II is one of the greatest games of all time, imho... but as a whole, Street Fighter is better than Mortal Kombat. (at least the classic games up until about MK4 and SF third strike)

Mortal Kombat, as good as it is will always be slightly handicapped because the game made it's name on a gimmick (the gore and blood).

Street Fighter did what Mortal Kombat did, even slightly better, without a gimmick. Gameplay is way smoother, as well.

That's not to say Mortal Kombat isn't great though, any 90's themed arcade should have both MK and SF.

Mortal Kombat is my vote and I've been a fan of both since they first showed up in my local arcade. SF:ww was good but not great, nostalgic yes but not great same with first MK. Then they released champion edition, HF and TF for SF2 but basic same game with a little additions. MK2 was a whole new gameplay and design compared to first and is hands down my favorite arcade fighter growing up. I never got into the alpha series as much just didn't feel the same but I did love the New Challengers. MK3 and UMK3 were well made in my opinion and helped bring a new feature to the fighting games with the run button which made for an extremely fast gameplay for those who mastered that style.

Both have come out with great new visions of both franchises (SF4/SSF4 and MK9) and seem to be listening to their fans for updates and gameplay which is great and only makes for a more entertaining gaming experience for all.

I currently own a dedicated MK2 cabinet with a 6 in 1 jamma switcher with MK, MK2, MK3, UMK3 and MK4 installed so that shows my dedication to MK :)

How do we keep dragging this topic out? :p

In the end, almost every fighting game has it's own sense of depth and strategy. So on one level, there kind of isn't a good straight up answer. Good games are good games. Bad games are bad games. Both series have their share of both.

With that said, SF > MK by a lot in my house. My opinion on SF is obvious from the three other threads I've ranted in...so I won't rant any more on that. :)

MK 1 and 2 are my preferred MK titles (have a MK2 cab I plan to run MK1 and 2 in), but UMK is supposedly the gold standard from what hardcore MK heads have told me. The series really got fucked up somewhere in between that and the latest console version. From my perspective, there were some very lazy releases design wise during that chunk, with the latest finally getting its shit together.

I don't know why people herald MK3. That game (and ultimate) was half assed and unfinished... period. Mortal Kombat II, although it didn't have as much going on, was a much better game.

Even though I really loved MK2 as a kid (and have to get a dedicated cab for it sometime...), it has nothing on even the sub-par Street Fighter games.

I always remember the MK series being full of holes when it came to the fighting system. I saw so many fights won with cheap infinite combos that it turned me off of the series right after vanilla MK3 - even as a kid.

As far as characters go, again, turned off completely after MK3. Characters like Stryker and Night Wolf made me facepalm even as a kid, while just about everyone was getting tired of all the personality-lacking ninja and robots. That MK3 lacked Johnny Cage - the one character in the game that had any sort of personality - was the final nail in the coffin.

Basically, MK eventually felt like it was treating it's actual fighting system as nothing more than a means to an end - that end being seeing a Fatality or some other flashy way to embarrass your opponent. In SF, even when I haven't always enjoyed the fighting system - that was always it's focus, and I respect it a lot more for it.

Of course, I prefer SNK games over the both of them. Samurai Shodown made MK seem old-fashioned with its far more stylized characters & interesting fight system - and yet it still had tons of blood and fatalities.

Very tough call. If I had the room, I'd gladly have representation from either/both in my collection. As a kid, I played Street Fighter CE at the arcade more than the Mortal Kombat games, but MK2 by far when it came to the console versions. I was obsessed with that game back in '94.

I think I'd narrowly choose MK2.

Street Fighter II created a revolution in the fighting game genre and drew people back to the Arcades even though it allready was the early 90's.

But the fun didn't end there, Midway was soon to be done developing a fighting game that used digitised images and digitised sounds.
Wit the horrible memory of Atari's PitFighter fresh in the back of our minds we weren't that excited about the Midway game.
And a US fighter game?????? Please

But then it hit the Arcades.......WOW Mortal Kombat was AWESOME in it's own way, unique just like SFII was.
I kept thinking, wow this game is actually good, it's better then good, it's awesome.
But both are completely different games and the only thing they share is that ther are the same genre.

I will never ever be able to choose, shared 1st place for me.
