I have a 19" Dynamo, I was working on it last week and being stupid I had the control panel opened but didn't remove the glass (this was a replacement glass I put in myself), while working on the speakers I must have knocked the glass because it fell to the floor and broke. So today I picked up a new piece of 23 3/4 by 23 3/4 by 1/8 of an inch thick. This is just your regular glass from a glass shop. I broke the second piece already, not sure how it happened but I think this is not the best glass to be using in an arcade machine, the stuff I picked up will easily crack, and just split all the way though. What would the right type of glass be? What thickness (standard)? It's a Dynamo cab. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you really want to use glass (I like it much better then plexi) then you should put a piece of 1/8" or 3/16" (if it will fit) tempered glass. Make sure you get those edges beveled though. Nothing like a sharp piece of glass to slice through the hand...

Is tempered much more expensive then regular glass? What's the difference, it shatters in little tiny pieces don't it? Is it stronger?
What about the plexiglass? Is there a certain kind that's better then others?

Tempered is more reistant to breakage

and yes, its the type that turns into little pieces

Think of car glass.. same stuff (except the windshield, that's safety glass)

I just boned up on tempered glass, it seems like it's 5 to 10 times stronger then regular glass with rounded edges. I think that's what i'll be using in my arcade games from now on. Thanks.

BTW, plexi is fine for this application and easy to come by. In the home you can probably keep it in nice shape by not scratching the piss out of it but it will get hazy and does scratch really easy. I suppose polycarbonate would be better as a screen cover but then your up to about the same cost as tempered glass so you may as well go that route.

One thing to keep in mind about tempered glass, be very careful when putting it down on another hard surface (ie concrete or tile). If it impacts the other surface to hard it will break.

a good piece of plastic will never break.
and weighs less

Never break, not ture. Plastic dries out and gets brittle over the years. I've seen them splinter simply by touching them.

Weighs less, like the cabinet cares about a few ounces. :)

Glass is always better when it can be used.

Been there, done that. I've shattered a couple over the years. Once the corner barely touched the floor and it shattered in my hands. Kinda like that commercial about the guy who everything he touches turns into skittles, it shattered like that. I'm gonna price out some tempered, i'll report back on the price difference. I paid $16.38 total for the new piece of regular glass (23 3/4 x 23 3/4 x 1/8").

Tempered will probably be slightly above $40.00.
