What to do with this cab?

I need to take a straw poll and see what people around here think. I have a relatively nice NFL Blitz cabinet that I picked up several months ago with the intention of possibly using it as a JAMMA cabinet. The problem is I didn't realize the game was designed as a JAMMA+ cabinet.

So, now that I'm in the mood for a little project, I have to decide what to do. Some things to consider:

• The cabinet has the 49-way optical sticks and a control panel that looks Blitz-specific (the inside of the cabinet itself is labeled Mortal Kombat 4) as it only has three buttons per player. Judging by the underside of the CP it never had six buttons. Not a big deal since I don't play many games with more than three buttons.

• The hard drive appears to be on the fritz. All the self-tests work but I can't get it to keep any records after powering down.

So, what's the best option here? There's not a whole lot I can do with a JAMMA+ and 49-way sticks setup except play the other NFL Blitzes and a few other games. Should I bother rewiring the cabinet and installing 8-way sticks or should I just keep an eye out for a real two-player JAMMA cab and just try to get this NFL Blitz working as well as it can (hard drive, few glitching buttons, etc.)?

Any feedback is appreciated.

you need to find out if your monitor is standard rez, medium rez, or ?? as that will help you decide what to do with the cab.

blitz plays fine with 8 ways. Its better with 49 way.

Unless you want to play fighting games, leave it as 3 buttons.

since its a MK4 cab, I assume its a standard rez 2 player cab and not 4 player.

If space is an issue and its standard rez, I would convert it to 8 ways and use it as a generic cab to swap pcbs.

Thanks for the reply. Yep, it's standard resolution, two-player. I assume I'm going to have to actually rewire it to JAMMA, correct? I haven't delved that deeply into the switchover process, which is part of the reason I've hesitated on moving forward.

It should be jamma the way it is. looks to see if you find 2 unsued connectors around the 2 joysticks.

I am not 100% sure as I have never had a 2 player game with 49 way sticks, but I think when wired for 2 player, the 2 49 way sticks plugged into the player 3 and player 4 connections on the pcb. When you want to use 4 player, thats when you need the i40 adapter pcb.

If thats correct, then the wires for the joysticks are probably there in the pannel.

The 49 ways might actually use the jamma harness. If so then then you would just need to use the same wires with the joysticks. So either way, you cabinet should be wired standard jamma.

flip open your panel and take a pic. Also trace where the wires go from the 49 ways to the pcb.. pins 18-21 and v-y are the standard jamma player 1 and player 2 connections.

Thanks, mrbill. I'll try to get digging into thing in the near future and grab some pics. Wish I had time to do it right now but you know how it goes. I'm re-energized on this, though. If all it took was swapping out the joysticks and not a full re-wire I'll be very happy!
