I picked up a cabinet with some cosmetic issues and in need of some help (and friends:)

Not sure how to move forward with this blemish in the picture attached.

While this is the worst of the damage there is certainly scuffs and bumps along the side. Honestly I would prefer to relaminate the sides, but do I remove the current laminate or could I just laminate over the current laminate? It looks like the T molding is slightly off centered which may allow for the additional 1/32 of an inch of the new laminate. Of course then I could fill in the damaged corner with miniput or some filler and then go right over it.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated :)

I say if you're gonna do it, do it right. I'm not sure what tools you have or your skill set but this is what I would do.

I would get a small board from Home Depot (smallest mine sells is 2'x4'). That looks like Particle board. Trace the other side onto the particle board so you get the angle correct. Cut out the damaged side, make sure it's square. Then, with the traced piece, cut the angled side first, then keep trimming down the other side until it fits flush. Biscuit and glue the new piece in place. Sand the glue that may leak out during the gluing process (or use a small rag with water and wipe it away as it comes out wile you compress the two pieces together) then, lay the new laminate. Take the time to prepare the rest of the surface too so the lamanite comes out looking great. I just remade a control panel for my X-MEN game with new art, check it out. Doing the whole process definitely pays off in the end.

Awesome. Thank you for your reply. I forgot to add that as a possibility and I think that's the route (pun) I will take. Question. Do you think I should laminate the newly cut particle board on the corner to create an even surface for the new laminate? Also, your X-men CPO looks great!

If you are peeling all of the laminate off all you need to do is paint prime and sand to get it all smooth and even. You would have to do that for laminate anyway. Adding the laminate really only adds a step. I considered doing the laminate but decided not to.

First off, is that actual laminate, cheap contact paper-like vinyl, or is it thin wood grain melamine which is infused to the particle board? If it's laminate or vinyl, remove it first. If the wood grain is infused to the particle board, rough sand the whole side until the old melamine is either all gone or flat, even and scuffed a bit. Cut out the damaged area with a jig or a fence and a router and cut and install a new piece of particle board to the cab with dowels or biscuits, bondo the seam, then sand the entire surface to get it even. Then lay the cab on its other side, clean it thoroughly, apply contact cement to both surfaces, wait 25 minutes or so, place 1/4 or 3/8" dowels across the cab width-wise from top to bottom, spacing them about 6-8 inches and then install the new laminate. J-roll from the center outward, removing dowels as you go. It is certainly not recommended to prime and/or paint before installing laminate. Laminate gets installed over bare or bare-ish particle board. Paint/primer could (and most likely will) chemically react with the contact cement and will bubble and lose its hold on the cab the over time.

Whoa. When Phetishboy gives you pointers, don't ask any questions. Just close your eyes and accept it...

Calm down. That was over 15 years ago. We were young, dumb starry-eyed college roommates. I'm sorry I hurt you, BUT I WAS EXPERIMENTING! I didn't know who I was yet. Please forgive me and stop bringing it up every other thread.

PS: When are you going to stop by and pick up your REM CD? It's been sitting on the radiator in the foyer all this time waiting for your return.

I don't often give rep, but when I do I am cock-blocked by the forum. Sigh. I tired. Seriously, if I haven't given rep in month, (probably over a year) I should be able to rep again.

Woah, that escalated quickly, but I mean come on, who didn't get tricked into getting penetrated in college! Anyway, IIRC it is a fused melamine but I will double check when I get home from work. I didn't think that was possible (still learning) so I appreciate the help @Phetishboy.
