I always hear "pull the chips, and clean the legs...". Whats the best stuff to clean them with?

I found the best method for me was to use a brass wire wheel on my dremel. Maybe not the safest and smartest way, but low speeds and paying attention to direction of spin and you shouldn't have an issue.

wouldn't that create small grooves in the metal decreasing contact area?

Fiberglass pencil. Won't gouge the metal like sandpaper or a dremmel. Even safe for the tarnished and weak Midway roms/Namco custom/TI-brand chips that have thin brittle legs.

I use DeoxIT D5 . Works brilliantly.

Yeah, deoxIT works pretty good, if your looking for something around the house to use, A common pencil eraser will usually work, the pointy kind that you stick on the top work best for me.
Whatever you use, you really want to try not to break through the coating, as that can actually make problems worse in the long run. So, sand paper, files, emery board, are not recommended.
And the type of socket in use will determine what side of the pin needs to be cleaned.
For instance a machined pin socket contacts the small edges of the pin where as some single wipe sockets contact the inner or outer surface of the pin. dual wipe is self explanatory.

Combine the two, put an eraser on your dremmel and spin that puppy against the legs.

This is a perfect time to rag on a long-time member. :D

We have a Arcade Technical Help section now. This type of question (and several others in this section) should be in there, as it's technically a "fix it" question.

We don't want to clutter up all the "check out my new game" threads.

I'm just sayin'...

I didnt say I was fixing anything, I merely asked a question. Do all questions go to the help section now? Hopefully all of the price check questions, the what should I do with this game questions, or the should I trade this for this questions go there from now on. Time to clean this place up, Mod.

Well, i would consider the "what to do with this game, should I trade this, is this too much" questions to actually be discussion about arcade games as a topic, and thus relevant to the Arcade Discussion forum.

I actually wouldn't mind a sub-forum under the Trading section for Price Discussion - either commenting on sales listed here, commenting on sales listed elsewhere (Craigslist, Ebay, etc), or questions about whether an item is worth a certain value.

Questions about "what board is this, what's the best part, how do I do this, what's my problem" are technically questions asking for help in accomplishing something of a technical nature (even if it's just for future knowledge of a repair you may do a long time from now), and should be in the Arcade Technical Help section.

Just be glad I didn't tell you to put your "cleaning" question in the Restoration section... ;)
