What the world needs - another Tron restoration!

have you verified main things, like the brightness is not turned down, black level pot on monitor isn't messed with, video signal cable plugged in on both ends, etc?

Cleverlyj, I pulled the chassis - see some suspect solder joints (both as a result of the cap kit i put in and just the board in general). The board is very "brittle" - when i put the caps in, one of the traces at C702 lifted right up. Its now flush with the board but i wonder if its truly not making a connection. The trouble i have is knowing - i tested continuity to other points, but not sure if it should make the connection or not (dont know what is "normal").

In anycase i will resolder tonight, install, and follow your advice regarding the Pots, which i havent tried. Connections were linked up though.

Thanks gsealock.

Great news tonight - its alive!

As noted last night, had some problems with a non working monitor (had glow but no picture).

Figured it needed reflowed solder so came home tonight and tried that - made progress as switching her on revealed a Blue line right down the center. Did a search here and saw that Modessitt and Dokert had similar issue before - very happy to have a reference and starting point (WG4900 vertical collapse). Quickly pulled the chassis again and reflowed solder in suggested areas - plugged it back in and same issue. Posted in the monitor section, and both guys quickly responded - suggested another go around. This time i reflowed pretty much everything.

Plugged her in and it worked! Thanks guys. Needed some adjustments to get it stable, and will need more tomorrow, but i can end the day knowing it works. :) Very rewarding experience. AND i may not need to adjust convergence (woo hoo!)

P.S - if anyone can suggest a lead on what the thin white lines are on the right side of the monitor and how to get rid of them - thanks in advance.

Sweet! But it can't be good for the game to have it sitting on it's side like that.

:) i know, i know. As Phet pointed out to me earlier sometimes my pics look like some sleazy CL seller posted them (that might be me).

I keep forgetting my camera should not be tilted "landscape" (or needs to be put into landscape mode). Especially last night - i was pretty amped up after seeing a working game and just tilted and clicked away.

tonight, i need to make a few screen adjustments and should get the ideal pic (hopefully).

I'm guessing you may need to turn down brightness or adjust horiz position / size to get rid of the with line on the right.

I had a simular problem with my ST:Voyager and ended up turning down the brightness on the HV section

The white lines/garbage on the right side of the screen is standard on MCR games. Satan's Hollow has it too. I think Journey and Spy Hunter may have that as well.

The white lines/garbage on the right side of the screen is standard on certain Midway/MCR games. Satan's Hollow has it too, possibly Journey and Spy Hunter as well.

I didnt spend too much time adjusting it last night - just happy enough to have a pic!

The white lines - in my pics there are two types -

-- Far right has really pronounced white garbage - Had the same thing on my Spy hunter - but running on the bottom of the pic. Tried every adjustment before getting a Horiz cap kit to adjust it out. On this Tron - I think a vert shift should eradicate it (hoping).

-- For the other lines (thin white lines) modessitt suggest vert dampening adjust - again hoping that works.

Cant wait to get home to try it.

Monitor all adjusted, thats it - Tron lives!

I also put in an Encom Marquee and Sticker - many thanks to Bob5150.

One final problem i have - game is not saving high scores (and i have an arcade shop MCR kit in there too!). Will look into it tomorrow.

In anycase, its been fun, but i am DONE here. Thanks everyone for watching.

Yes. Thanks Bob. Although the marquee was in good shape, i still took a buffer to it with novus 2 - shined it right up.

High scores save now, so the machine is 100 percent. Now onto getting past the third wave - that games gets tough quickly. How is it humanly possible to shoot those bricks fast enough to get into the MCP Cone....

Shoot REAAAAALL fast... and move quick... Just imagine level 5.. ;) its a beeeotch.

Zitt, for now just doing little things i've been meaning to do (Crystal castles needs new artwork for example).

Next - Tron LE which will ship needing nothing i hope.

How do you like the Planet audio speakers you added over the original?
Great resto thread!!

Horrible. I ended up using them in a spy hunter cockpit behind the seat - because, the magnets caused some distortion in the monitor.

Thanks for the comment. As a followup, Tron is worry free, plays well and often. My only issue is the game loses high scores every 5 or so cycles. It has the arcade shop battery, so not sure why it's happening, something to look into.

Did you get your Tron LE yet?
If so; I'd be surprised if you got any time on fixing the machine's high score problem.

I know nothing about the Tron board; but I'd check the NVRAM chip for corrosion and/or pin oxidation.

Zitt, good to hear from you - following the Star Trek thread.

No Tron LE - it doesnt ship until next week. BUT, after playing it, i am undecided - not sure if i want to do it. Lots of thinking to do over the long weekend, and happy it hasnt shipped so i get the time. I did land a nice BSD (Dracula) - thats a good pin right there.
