What the world needs - another Tron restoration!

Latest pics uploaded - they are in the front (front three - the CP, sideart left and right put on) (Photbucket strange sorting).

-- Cp put together. Took me three hours - dont ask me why just struggled with it or i just took my time. Finally got it assembled. Came out nice - besides using Groovy Game gear Tron Joystick - which is incredible and well made i cant wait to use it, i also put in a Satans hollow insert (red checkered pattern). I have the Tron insert from the Phoenix artwork package, but just like the Red checkered pattern.

-- Capped the monitor. Figured i could get that out of the way. Note that the WG chasis was very brittle / i had one cracked trace at C702 - i sure hope that doesnt cause any issues. Making a note for the future here...

-- Side art on!! Big step. Did it wet and alone (that sounds bad).

I didnt sweat - when a decal job goes poorly, common symptom is LOTS OF SWEAT (ive had it happen before). This time i was smart - when peeling the sideart, i sprayed it with soapy water as it came off the backing. This way, if one side touched the other, i didnt ruin the art.

Its amazing how much room for error you are allowed when using the wet method - lots of time to adjust, peel back up, correct height and bubbles. Overall, i am very happy with the results.

Also, another mistake i made - applying in 80 degree weather / direct sunlight. The wet stuff (soapy water) was gone within a minute of spraying - therefore, didnt have much time to adjust. Again, managed to pull it off, and pretty happy with it.

Going to take the night off (i will try!). Tomorrow, plan to assemble the coin door and start putting parts back in.

Inner shroud art will go on last after i have the cab together.

great stuff..
hope you take pics of the wiring harness stuff and how it connects to the boards.
I need to find out about making up new harness or finding some.

Are the transparent buttons normal or just a cool add?

Vector,

That link i just put together - it only contains pics i took of the harness routing around the cab before the teardown - i will use it myself when i start assembling everything this week (its a different link than the restore link, which i only post progress pics to). Hoping you find it helpful.

Tearing down goes fast (its been a week now), but putting it all back together - that takes more time. When i complete the effort, i can certainly upload detailed pics of the final version - should be much nicer for your task since there wont be filth on the wires.

The red buttons - when i got the game, there were white translucent buttons. I liked the idea - when placing my order to Bob Roberts i picked em out - they differ from the stock red i guess.

By the way, here is a list of Mods / Customizations i have done / plan to do - i think it all looks better:

-- DOT Blue Tmolding (as you can see from the pics) - i was debating the blue - but now that its on, it looks incredible.

-- All new art package from Phoenix arcade - as you can see - amazing quality. I compared under blacklight the old art, like the Tron tower in the background, to the new stuff. NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE - The Phoenix art shines many times better.

-- See through Red buttons :)

-- Upgraded speakers - Planet audio, 30 dollars or so for the pair through Amazon.

-- Groovy game gear joystick with Satans hollow insert.

-- Arcade shop Power switcher and adapter

-- ** Considering - adding ENCOM logo and marquee. Not sure yet. I already have a nice marquee and repro midway logo for the coin door, and think this would be too much already!

-- Riptors Tron Optical board.

-- Probably something else, but those are the major ones. If i think of any others i will reply.

Update:

-- Shroud inner art applied. First, a huge thank you / appreciation for Phoenix Arcades product. The Tron art work package is now fully applied, and i must say they make a quality product - the best repro i have seen. Absolutely gorgeous and quality work.

Second, laying art work is EASY now that i have done it a few times - with the wet method. Anyone with fears of application / messing it up just has to realize that with a spray bottle of soapy water, liberal (reasonable amounts) sprayed on the back of the art and to the source, chances of foul up are very slim. The Adhesive used will set immediately upon water dry - its pretty hi tech and cool stuff.

As for the art - oh boy. The inner art needs to be trimmed to fit, centered with the blacklight housing. I failed arts and crafts in school. That factor led to a less than ideal job - but i think i am being too hard on myself. Both sides match up, the only issue is it might be a inch or so higher than it should be.

How did i cut it? Lots of advice to online to lay paper / make a template / cut across the template. I said NO to that and just free formed it, inching it in, cutting, inching it in, cutting (the need for template / cut is due to angles around monitor and CP mount pieces which are unremovable).

Overall, happy with the results - will post pics tomorrow.

Phetish,

I found it easier to just post them on Photobucket - i can get more pics posted up there that way....Pics are here:

http://s663.photobucket.com/albums/uu352/jonathan1138/Tron Restore/

First three pics are most recent / the rest are ordered oldest -> Newest.

I will rearrange this week to have all pics always oldest -> Newest (Photobucket has some strange sorting algo that i need to bypass, hence the last three going to the front).

I am using this thread more as a journal at this point, something i can look back on.... i never did that before and would be nice to revisit it down the road.

** Also, the fourth pic is my Brother in law!

It's easier (and more fun for your reader), if you just use the image tags. 2 clicks and the pics are here:

But, do whatever you like.

Hey that looks good!

Ok - i will try it (moving forward will post the latest pics up here). Not too many to go either - figure assembly should only take a few more days. I hope.

Two other latest pics of the Sideart applied.

Now you need to stop masquerading as a bottom feeding CL seller and at least rotate the pics. *sigh* Also, use the tags, don't attach them.

lol. Yes, i am dreg of society CL seller trying to hide the poor quality of my work.

I was going to ask you how you managed to embed so nicely. I will try that.

By the way - a year ago or so you posted about how Tron would look with DOT molding. Now, before you take credit for the idea- I thought about first, and looked it up here only to find you started a thread on it. Now that you see it (a few more days and you can see the finished product of course) - what do you think? I think it matches up nicely.

I knew it was going to look good when i was painting and the blue painters top really made the cab pop - that was justification to go all the way with the molding i had on hand.

I effing love it and am still going to be doing the same thing. I am not a fan of black molding on a black cab. What's the fun in that? Yours is looking AWESOME. That blue T-molding is the ticket.

Yes - the Blue matches the Tron figure on the sideart perfectly. So you are lining one up? Something to look forward to.

If you are - Please - get a sample of this Benjamin Moore Advanced black paint and match it up / test it out and let me know your thoughts compared to other paints you have used - I am in love with it. I am looking for more projects after this one just to use it again.

Well, thanks for the kind words on my efforts and cant wait to see when you get yours back in action. I've come to realize - If there is one game deserving of a restore its Tron. So much great artwork, it might be one of the nicest looking cabs i know of.

Not much to report today. Doing little odds and ends like cleaning up, sorting screws, redoing some paint on the trim (one needed to be stripped and repainted), fixing some wiring issues on the harness.

Here are pics of the Side art i did last night though. Looking at it again, i think it came out ok.

Cab starting to go back together. Maybe by Friday it will be completely assembled.

No real issues. Not looking forward to putting on that front light cover - its tight under the mounted lower blacklight, i need to squeeze some nutz in there (thats we she said!)

Other than that, i was messing with the spinner today - its binding. Should it be a free movement, like a Tempest? Need to look into that.

Finally, the boards are out at CDJUMP (good guy). So, i can take my time since i have nothing to test yet!

Thanks.

Oh yeah - on the front pics - those are Polished bolts in the front / below coin door holding the coin bucket. Some part of me just loves shiny bolts, so i am keeping that in. Let me know what anyone thinks...

Your pics are killing me...that inner art work looks soooo nice

Vector - So why not start?

I can take as many detailed pics as you need of the harness- PM me and we can setup a plan - While i build the album of pics you get started on the cab...
