what techniques have you learned after seeing another play?

I remember fighting with my TRON and almost giving up on it until watching someone play it on a YouTube vid.. I noticed their stick trigger was firing alot faster than mine, and I was like "hey wait a minute, how come they get to shoot faster???" Come to find out, mine was all crudded up and it wasn't allowing me to fire the trigger as quickly as you should be able to for the game. Once I got that corrected, my score started going up quickly. :D

What did you learn by seeing another doing on a game that helped you?

Not quite the same, but I almost forgot there was a thrust button on Asteroids. I was playing in the middle of the screen the whole game until my dumb ass realized there were more buttons to press.

I have many...

- Learned spring board/birds pattern on the higher levels on DK Jr from Jason Cram

- Learned how to pass the invisible platform boards on Zoo Keeper from Greg Bond

- Learned overall Qix techniques from Donald Hayes .inp file

- Learned all my driving game knowledge/Sinistar from Richie Knucklez

I've tried to give back over time as much as possible to help others as well from any techniques I've learned on my own on games like Berzerk, Gorf, Bosconian, Elevator Action, DK3, Galaga, etc.

Getting out to tourneys at Funspot and Richie Knucklez for instance has really helped in terms of knowledge share with other competitive gamers.

Hehe I hear you Drew, sometimes I think I get myself in MORE trouble when I start moving around, but sometimes it's just plain inevitable.. And that Hail Mary Hyperspace, you can forget that for me.. I'm better off fighting the fight and seeing how it fares.

I watched how to do a setting up a double barrel Jump *on DK* and then going down the latter and jumping the same 2 barrels again.

I don'nt know if this has made me better! Makes the game alot Harder.

That's a big key to point pressing the barrel stages. As well as being able to control the barrels to create those big jump opportunities.

I have a bad habit of this with multigames. Ill play my ass off with the joystick and 1 button and not realize that that game uses both buttons

I learned how to beat up Robotrons from watching BFD when he wouldn't break a million. I don't break the bezels anymore since I have to pay for them now....:D

I did learn the amazing trick of running at the grunts while firing at them in the waves where it looks like there are a gazillion of them. The cool thing is that the closer you are to them the more shots you can get off because the shots don't need to travel as far.

I watched Shawn Cram play Zoo Keeper at Funspot last summer and picked up a few tips. Now I will crush his world record muhahahahahaha...

I had someone tell me they learned a few tricks they didn't know after they watched me play a game of mr do at Pinball Petes in Ann Arbor. I guess they weren't very good or something, cause I'm not that great.

These dudes used to be pretty good at Defender. It was Britt, and I think Howard. Well, things would get pretty hairy at the end of a wave with all these baiters zooming in and all and Howard would start yelling-

BAITER THRUST!

BAITER THRUST!

and Britt would be zipping all around back and forth, avoiding 5 or 6 baiters on the screen and I couldn't tell if there was some special technique or not.

People would be stretching their necks to see what was going on.

Now I know that there's no special 'move' you can do to avoid them. It's just something you learn with a lot of reversing and shooting and slow movements up and down. I don't think you can explain it. Nothing works against them for long (except finishing the wave :)

I got past the 3rd elevator boards with the YouTube video from Richie Knucklez. I'm hoping to use it on other games as well. I've been studying Berzerk, and I'll probably try to find something that gets me past 3-1/2 minutes of Sinistar.

Most of the things I learned were on fighting games (MK, Street Fighter, KI) and pinball machines. Special moves and fatalities on the fighting games and ball paths, bounces and things to shoot for on pins.

Another one I learned that is more pin-based is on my Sorcerer, if you hit the right flipper button during gameplay, you can manipulate what lights are lit at the top of the playfield. There are 4 lights that are green when lit, and if you get all 4 lit it bumps up your point calculation. You need however to alter the order of which ones are lit when the ball is up there, and that's where hitting the flipper button comes into play.

One of my wife's nephews taught me that. Apparently it can be done with other pins as well, however I don't know what ones.

That's pretty standard on a lot of pins, but it's amazing how many people forget about it. It actually frustrated me when I play a pin that I can't rotate which one is lit up.
