Hey Guys,

I'm clearing out room, parts, and arcade machines to make room for a Red Baron and a possibly a Star Wars.

I kind of a have a 3 questoins.

1st What should I expect to pay for a working Red Baron
2nd. Which do you think would be better to get? A non-working Red Baron for cheap, or a working Red Baron for more money.
3rd. I do have a working Battlezone so should I just get a Red Baron upright to live next to my Battlezone or would you still consider looking for a cockpit?

Thanks

Do you have any leads at this point? Red Baron might be hard to find. I would go for the cockpit if you have the money but are there any to be found?

I know where 3 are, distance seems to be my biggest problem honestly. The cockpit isn't working, and its a bit rough . . . but its a cockpit.

I know where two uprights are but they are 1K+ but free shipping and guaranteed working . . .

$1K for a UR in great working & physical shape isn't out of bounds, IMHO.

That is what I'm trying to figure out, I don't mind spending that much BUT at the same time I don't want to spend too much, however I figured free shipping, I don't have to spend the gas to get the machine AND its tested working, makes me feel better about spending that kind of money.

Depends on how much you love the game. Cockpits are always nice, but they obviously take a lot of room. What may seem cool now may become a nuisance in 3 months. Non-working games can save you some money, but not if it's a non working boardset and you have to pay someone to repair it, your savings can go out the window.

I'm definitely not the resident Red Baron expert, so you might wanna wait for others to chime in.

But, having played the game, I'd be willing to cough that much up for it myself (if I had room and cash).

If I am dropping serious cash then I am going to buy a working machine not a broken one.

There are three issues with the cockpit that I found. First is the space it will take up, second is that the boardset doesn't work and finally its about 700 miles away.

I've done long hauls for games before, check out my thread about my Berzerk cocktail however it was mostly working and I already had the parts to fix that machine.

However this machine is not in the best shape, some water damage, part of the Bezel has been eaten (yeah . . .) and it doesn't work, so by the time I get the cockpit back to my place, get it fixed, and fix all the damaged areas, I'll probably be spending more than an upright.

Also seeing as I do have a Battlezone, I think it would look awesome having the Battlezone and Red Baron together!

I love Vectors, I've absolutely fallen in love with my Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator, but at the same time I miss playing my Asteroids Deluxe and I can't wait for my grommets to get here so I can find my Battlezone!

I've played the game in MAME, which is very the same, and the controls where not good at all but I still had a blast playing Red Baron.

Also my son loves air planes, and I think he would get a real kick out of playing Red Baron.

Agreed, though the cockpit is almost a 1/3 the cost of the upright, it doesn't work, its not cosmetically in good shape, and I would have to travel 700 miles to get it :(

Red Baron is a cool game I just wish I knew how rare it was before I sold it. To me the gameplay in Battlezone is way better and I didn't have the room for both so that's why I sold it.

I'm not really familiar with the going rate of Red Baron's, but I got my upright for $300. It was complete, non-working, and in pretty good shape. A couple factors to why it was so cheap: it was part of a bulk deal and the seller understood that it was non-working and would take some investment to get it going. If I were to sell mine once it's all working and cleaned up (which I'm currently not planning on doing), I'd probably price it around $800. Again, I'm not sure on "going-rate"; and that price is just reflecting what I got it for and the time/money I'm currently spending on it.

As for cockpit vs upright, I agree with everyone else that cockpits are going to take up much more room. Plus, I really love how Battlezone and Red Baron look next to each other. I would personally go for an upright.

For me I know that a good $300 ~ $400 is the cost of shipping, and the machine looks to be in what I consider excellent shape, and it works, and is clean.

So that would put the cost of the machine around $800 ~ $900 which everyone seems to think is a good deal for a Red Baron.

Agreed! That picture is just awesome. I think just for the factor that the upright I'm looking at is working, and is in good shape, and it won't take up as much room as the cockpit, I leaning towards the upright even though it will cost me more money.

Also I don't have to "drive" and go pick it up, that saves me a ton of money on gasoline pulling my trailer.

I think this is a $500-$600 game in working condition. Cockpit maybe $200 more, although some people think the upright is actually more valuable.

It's not a particularly rare game compared to others. Be patient.

I'm taking in cabinet condition into my consideration, and the shipping, having it delivered to my door step is so very nice.

Part of me wants to be patient and wait for a really good deal to pop up but at the same time, I've missed 2 already, and one was working for $500 but the cabinet was rough, the other the cabinet was in nice shape, but it wasn't working and I believe it went for $650 but the cabinet was in remarkable shape.

Also I've heard from multiple people that they only made 1,500 uprights and 500 cockpits . . .

Best guess is any Red Barron will go between 300 and 1000. That being said, I've been looking for one for a while and haven't ran across one in forever....Nor do I have any leads on one at 300. So it could be higher depending on location....A nice UR Red baron is ideal...But the coolness factor on a CP is way up there....Honestly, if I had any kind of room, and I wanted a RB at this point, I'd buy the first one I came across. If I came across another one in much better shape, I'd buy it and sell my old one. As for working vs. non working..., its more important that it be complete. You can expect the monitor to be non working or needing something....They always do. As long as the board is in good working condition, your set. Anything else can be fixed. And the pcb can be fixed for that matter, but you usually have to send it off to someone and wait 6 months. Expect to rebuild the PS, and the monitor as soon as you get it unless it was recently done. And even then, you may have to fix something. Get it right, and it should be right for a long while, get it wrong and you will probably be doing repairs over and over....For example, you might as well put new PCB connectors on it so you don't blow the PS. Hope that helps.

Great words of advice. Just get it complete and in good shape. Expect things to be a little work to get running; and hey, if they work...bonus!

Thank you both for the advice, hooked up a joystick to MAME tonight to try the game out and I had a blast playing it, I can definitely see how its not a game for everyone, but I loved playing it!

I have 3 uprights a very cool game

Just sent you a PM Rlevin!

The last one I sold went for $650 boards and monitor recapped. But it only had Red baron sideart on one side..

I dont think $1000 is to high for a really nice one.. But $500-$800 is prob the range for a pretty good one... IMO...

If you do see one pop up on the low end grab it quick, it wont last long...
