I bought this not to long ago for dirt cheap, 50$ to be exact. Cab is solid and no water damage, it has its spots were wood was smashed in and wont be a problem to repair. I dont like bowling games at all so that junks going out. The monitor currently does work but its only a tube issue(cracked neck) and I have a person I'm getting a replacement from. All the electronics are fine and coin mechs work. Im stuck on what to do with it. I really want a Mortal Kombat machine and maybe make just a Mortal Kombat Mame machine. Im pretty sure the side art will be trashed when I start removing the textured blue paint thats on there now and I really dont wanna spend close to 200$ on full side art, would the smaller half side art look bad? Ill be taking my time with this and start fully stripping and painting the cab first. Any ideas what you would do? Is it a waste of a pc and arcade vga just to have MK games on it? Please give me some ideas Thanks

I had a MKII cabinet that had been painted black. I used 3M Safest Stripper and was able to remove the black paint very easily. Basically I applied a thick layer of the stripper and let it sit for a little bit. Then i was able to scrape it off the black paint with a plastic scraper. You can tell when its ready as the paint kind of crinkles. It takes a little getting used to but you will get the hang of it in no time.

That is what I would try and do first. Its worth a shot. Hopefully the artwork underneath is nice.

i did the same thing as yoda, I recommend citri strip without a doubt. My resto is also on the forum under the title "fisher price my first restoration"

It's easy to make a new control panel, you should convert it back to an MK2 if you're able to. Depending on whether or not the sideart is intact. ;)

nice big monitor like that i would think whatever you do with it, it will look awesome

i'd put a multi williams in it and play some ROBOTRON !!!!

theres a good chance the original layout is underneath and if it was done right the trackball will be 1/4 of the way through 1 hole and slightly through the other so they still hold buttons. new overlay and plexi and your golden ;)

Solution

Funny, I'm doing basically the same restoration now. I have an MK1 that was also painted over, and I'm converting it back. I found some 'graffiti remover' stuff that works very well..

mine has some really thick textured paint on it, looks like it was sprayed with a shitty sprayer and it just spit it on there, i might something tough

Ah, I see. However, the paint on mine was practically 1mm thick! A process of Spraying, waiting, wiping with a rag, and sometimes (carefully) scraping with a putty knife does the trick for me.

Well, I did a 5-in-1 with a switcher and actual hardware a while back...

I also did a Mame conversion on an MK2 that I got for $100. (The video is AFTER I did the restoration and conversion)..

My advice would be to Mame it if you want all the MKs. You can always add all the other games you want. You shouldn't need anything more that a J-Pac and a computer. If the computer's onboard video card is ATI or NVidia, then you can just use the Soft15Khz program and you wouldn't need an ArcadeVGA card. Those are my thoughts.

i thought of that but wont before windows loads it will hurt the monitor before the soft15khz can load and tell the video card to switch to that refresh rate?

Doesn't hurt mine at all. I am using a WGK7400. No issues at all.
