What makes a fighting game good?

I know this is a little off topic, but since it's not specifically a question regarding arcade fighters, a game I really enjoyed was Bushido Blade. I really wish they would redo that game with updated graphics. It had no health bars and you really had to watch yourself on that one as a mistake could end up in defeat with a single move.

The one hit kill comment made me think about this game also but I didn't comment about it. Yes it's a great game. Did you konw you can link two machines and run around w/ your own screen? The developer was called "Lightwave" and I think that they closed up shop a while ago. Koei was the publisher but they've had their troubles and I doubt they have the resources to revive one of their "B" franchises...

Bushido Blade was a lot of fun, it and Bushido Blade 2 got a lot of play with some friends of mine, the somewhat chesslike strategy to it of what move to do hoping the other player wasn't about to do a counter move that would kill you in one shot was a big draw for us. Though not really a fighting game, New Japan Pro Wrestling 3 was a major hit with us for similar reasons with it's rock-paper-scissors move gameplay. I still have BB & BB2 and they get popped into the PS3 periodically as they're still really fun to play.

I do remember Ehrgeiz being fun as well though I didn't play it a heck of a lot and haven't played it in years. The MAME port is really not playable, my PS1 capable of running imports has had a dead drive for a while and the arcade board is insanely expensive. Tobal 1/2 seem to have had some interesting bits to the fighting system as well though again I haven't played them in forever.

I'd rather do pushups naked on the floor of a YMCA bathroom at 3 AM then ever play "PIT FIGHTER" again........... Literally I feel like puking my pants when I see that attraction video to the game......

I just liked cutting down the bamboo on that cherry blossom stage in Bushido Blade. My then girlfriend liked to play that game because she could one-shot me every now and then.

I don't know anyone that did not like Bushido Blade. It's definitely unique for the genre, although it's basic premise can be linked to Karate Champ. When you and your opponent are warmed up and into it, it can get really stressful with a ton of dirty mind games. The good stressful. :)

Kengo for PS2 was the last "attempt" I know of for a Bushido Blade style game. Genki kind of screwed up with that one adding a life meter. You could get one to two shot kills, but it had to be pretty specific. It otherwise played fairly similar to Bushido Blade IIRC (been a loooong time since I spun that disc).
