What makes a fighting game good?

De-converting it back to the original game it was before conversion.

Or if it happened to be a dedicated, converting it to anything else, Arkanoid, Pong, anything.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one who thinks that...I was just gonna say "nothing", but your response was much better :D

Character design
fluid movement
many moves/options
-surprisingly older games still holdup..2d ones as well
To this day my favorite fighter is LastBlade2..great game!

I think every fighting game has a pick up and play aspect to it. You can go from one game to the next and within a few minutes you can figure out a way to beat the first few opponents. It's the hidden mechanics of the games though that make them stand out. Like it was mentioned before you can grab E. honda or chun li and just press buttons and win. When you get to the level of play in this video though. good look with those tactics.

Yeah, but you know what's next? The armchair guys that look at the video and don't understand footsies and mind games and wtf is actually going on. I love guys like that. Then they play and hate the game and go back to Halo or something.

I HATED the fighting games that allowed you to put together 25 hit combos by making 3 or 4 moves.
I used to watch a buddy of mine when he played the King of Fighters series on the Neo Geo. I didn't really care for the 25 hit combos either. Personally I grew up on the early MK games (mostly 1 and 2) and the SF2 games. Champion Edition is one of my all-time favorite fighters. I never stayed with fighting games after that time though.

Actually, I have to admit, this is probably the best fighting game of all time...no other game has come close... ;)

I was there and I do understand the depth to play at that level.
3rd Strike is one of my favorite games ever. I have so many versions of it but sadly rarely play because I just no longer work in a place were we can have one and play during breaks.

hey Prairied1ll0 I know you were waiting for me :)

IN MY OPINION, king of fighters 98-2002 are the absolute 2d fighters in terms of deep gameplay, only sf alpha 3 is as deep, not the other sfs.

in 3d virtua fighters are the deepest

Some people think that deep is defined by throwing in loads of different characters and styles. Alpha 3 and CvsSNK go this way. That's just one way.

3rd Strike doesn't have as many characters nor variants of styles (isms) but in pure gameplay as a fighter it's the deepest. It's actually too deep, that's why maybe you and many others didn't catch on. Parry changed everything. No longer can people turtle up like many other fighters. The mind games of faking that you would parry their jump in even got way deeper. Mixing throwing, parrying, jumpins, crossovers, etc becames a deep mind game.

This is it's greatest problem actually. Many couldn't change and learn to parry. It's for this reason that they no longer used parry on SF4. Parry widened the skill gap and drove away too many players.

Yeah its all about KOF .

Street fighter is easier to pick up play , so everyone likes it .

I like all of them 94-2003 .

As someone else mentioned, this forum is on another planet when it comes to talking about fighting games. You're in for some disappointment.

Meh...if they don't like it, they don't have to read it.

My favorite will always be SFII: The World Warrior. Next would be SFII' Hyper. I liked Mortal Kombat...kind of had to since most operators that were in 7-11 had switched out SFII for MK. Most of the arcades had SFII' in place of SFII by that time as well.

I would like a World Warrior board with a set of Rainbow ROMS for my collection.

I prefer the Soul Calibur series... the 8-way run mechanic really appeals to me and the weapons keep things interesting. Plus, CONQUEST MODE!!! :D

If only SFIV came out on arcades. As fighters that aren't Smash Bros go, that's my favorite.

I wish Brawl had come out on arcades. It's the one game I'm truly tourney level on (or I was before my disc went whack--haven't played in a year).

It did, and there's an updated version coming out to arcades as well (with the new characters likely to hit consoles as dlc), only problem is it's uncommon as all hell in the US.

Wait, it did!? I couldn't find any indication than it did o.o Even Wikipedia says it was only 360/PS3. Guess I have to track that one down now, haha

better stick to play sf2 on arcades, unless you like playing with ape-like characters that sf4 has :)

*facepalm*

That was a typo, I meant to say SCIV, not SFIV. Damn F key being by the C key. =P And here I was scouring the web for an SCIV PCB. LOL
