What kind of printer for side art? DesignJet... what else?

I have 6 games that need artwork. I expect there will be more games down the road that will need art work.

The math seems to say that I will spend a lot of money in art to make these looks decent again.

So I figure if I am going to be that deep into it. I figure I would look for a printer so I could print my own.

Can you guys throw around what kind of printers would handle making side art for these machines. Is a 36 inch wide printer gonna do all the art or do I need a wider printer than that?

What kind of printers are people using to produce this stuff?

I pretty much stopped printing because of the costs and time involved. It wasn't worth it.

A good printer solvent based ink (not water based crap) will run you over 10k. You don't want a used one because of the inks, if it's been turned off any length of time it will need a lot of expensive work done. a big printer is just one piece. the quality of the printhead, the quality and depth of color etc. are all important so the chinese poop out there that looks so cheap anyone can do it is a big hose job. Printer maintenance is a full time job all by itself which is a large part I didn't know going in that eventually soured me on doing my own printing.

Now, printing aside, do you know anything at all about color, color matching or color conversion? How about artwork and resolutions? Can you vector well? If you don't have a very good grasp of those things you'd be wasting your time and money until you do. It's not so simple as see picture print picture sellz awesomez artz!

I dropped 17k on my printer, I do have the art skills to do color and design and it was more than I had patience to mess with and keep the printer running correctly so I no longer print in house for that reason so now I have a rather expensive boat anchor. Make sure you are ready for what you're talking about trying.
