What justifies the cost of Atari's Road Runner?

I have wondered for years what makes this game sell for as high as it does having such mediocre gameplay IMO. I always see them sell for $500 and up. Is it due to rarity? I wanted one pretty badly 2-3 years back along with Marble Madness but now that I think about it,I don't remember why. lol Now Marble Madness,thats a $500+ game in my eyes.

Its rarity and its ties to the Looney Tunes I would assume. I had one once. I traded an Indiana Jones kit even up for a Road Runner kit and installed it into my restored System 1 cab. It was fun for a little while but extremely difficult. Come to think of it, that's exactly how Indy was for me. I didn't think much of either game really. When I finally converted it to Marble Madness, I barely got $250 shipped for the RR kit.

Damn, it's worth 500!? There was one fully working for 200 right by me and I passed it up because I wasn't familiar with it. I feel dumb.
 
Must be the Warner Bros tie-in because it sure as hell ain't that fun of a game.
 
The joystick. Even a broken Atari logo HE joystick is easily worth $50... so if a game has a functioning one, the stick alone can be worth $100-$150, even more.
 
It's a great platformer once you get the hang of it.

Add in the awesome System 1 sound/graphics and the Looney Tunes tie in and it is wonderful.

My one credit, best score is around 1.4m, the game still increases in difficulty at that point and in fact starts adding stuff like Invisible Paint which the Coyote makes a B-line for instead of chasing you first which totally changes the game...and that's after 1m points which IMO is really cool.

You need to stick with it and improve to really reap the benefits of the gameplay experience.

My hall effect stick desperately needs a rebuild but this is some of the play later in the game, it gets pretty frantic and challenging.

Yep, it's a great game with a lot of hidden fun things in it that tie back to various cartoon episodes.

I had one back around 2000 or so, sold it for some reason I don't remember and have not seen a complete one again for sale close to me since.

I miss it and should've kept it.

I would also have to guess its due to rarity. IIRC, this was a kit when new and when it didnt earn to well, an op would have shelved it. The kit would ultimately get lost, broken or ?. Multiply that by a all the op's in the country and that just adds to the rarity today.

Okay,so just to clarify and correct me if I'm wrong. The only game that came dedicated from the factory in this cabinet is Roadblasters? Indy,MM,and RR were all kit only?
 
I've got a Marble Madness and a Peter Pack Rat that have matching SN's on all the parts showing they came from the factory like that. I think there were like 165 PPR dedicated. Mine is 144. I think the Road Runner I traded to Katana Joe had matching numbers as well. I'm not sure though and would have to have him check.

Well, that would be kinda impossible. Road Blasters was the last of the System 1 games produced. Marble Madness was first.
