I can't seem to find a statement of purpose anywhere. Is it truly the preservation of classic arcade games? Does that include MAME systems and Multigames, or are these counter to the reason this forum exists?

I don't know anything about the KOLV forums, but I don't really think the KLOV forums have a purpose. They just exist. Let it be. Things with purpose are pointless.

You seem to forget one thing. This is supposed to be a forum connected to a website about preserving classics, not making mames out of them. Do what you want, but if you mame stuff here then in my opinion you are in the wrong place and are just another hack with some games...

Just trying to figure out if this is a correct statement.

Originally it was Phet's personal dating site. But then all the talk about joysticks got waaay off track. :p:D

..

KLOV = KILLER LIST OF VIDEO GAMES
VAPS = Video Arcade Preservation Society

my guess, video game collecting and preserving. A place for peeps with like-minds can talk about classic games.

arent both sites connected anyway?

My suggestion is - you disappear for a while - go wander the Earth and ponder the charter of KLOV and VAPS and then return only when you have the answer you're seeking.

As for the rest of us - we will somehow carry on until you return.

Ignore what ArcRevival says when he starts his preserve / restore rants.
He doesn't read the posts and will just respond with accusations and preaching.

While I agree that people collecting should be trying to restore the games, if it cant be sold or will cost more to buy the parts then the game is worth, what can you do.

Just look at ArcRevival's Blog, he gave up on a BattleZone cabinet just because he didn't have the parts to fix it.

I consider it a moral victory getting 3 out 4 working again as there weren't enough parts to make the fourth game whole and the cabinet was busted up.

He has (mistakenly IMHO) trashed a few people here that were trying to save, restore whole games, and think he has the opposite effect than he intends to have.

He took 4 BZ cabs that were dead and destined for the trash and created 3 working cabs. The games did not belong to him and the 4th non working cab was not salvageable. If turning 4 dead games into 3 working games is not preserving games, then what is?
Dave goes to great lengths to preserve every game possible, and to suggest otherwise is foolish. Dave and I both have a garage full of games that we could make some money from parting out, but we go to great lengths to get the games working, or at the very least keep them whole and pass them on to someone that is looking for a project to restore.

I'm glad someone here is willing to take a stand for the preservation of games, as that is what this site VAPS/KLOV is all about.

ArcRevival is just one of those people who thinks that his opinions and ideals should apply to everyone. Just ignore him, he's only being a nusiance if you actaully let it get to you.

Yeah Vaps and KLOV are the same thing ,

I have so much to say about this topic but it's best left alone. It's no secret that Arcrevival and i aren't real big fans of each other but i give him credit for what he's trying to do. Scrapping and converting games is a touchy subject but this is the way this hobby is going to finish itself off in the next few years and nobody(not even you Dave) are going to stop it. My garage door is wide open to anyone that wants to take on some of the garbage that gets delivered to my place, it always has been open and yet it's funny that nobody has ever come forward. Pay me what i paid for it and do your part to save the arcade world. Until then, i'll keep providing parts, repairing/restoring games that are worthy and the rest goes to the dumpster.

When you're dying on a hospital bed and your failed body part is unable to be repaired, are you gonna accept a donor part to preserve your own life or turn it down because someone else's life was cut short and sacrificed? Not really an apples to apples comparison here but the concept is the same.

Regardless of this sites mission, posts and peoples actions will remain the same. What are you going to do, 'ban' posts that mention a game was mame'd? Cmon.

For those that need soaring rhetoric about saving games there are plenty of preservation evangelists out there...Some of them mentioned in this thread.

...

Hobby isnt gonna die in a few years. People have been crying about that for years. HOBBY OVER, HOBBY OVER!
Actually, since the hobby started 10+ years ago lots of "collectors" started converting tons and tons of games back into their original state. If anything, there are probably more dedicated games now than there were 10 years ago, but lots of peeps in the recent years have been converting them into multi's instead (myself included).

Only time will tell with the hobby. Still a shame in my opinion to convert nice dedicated game into a multi, even worse to part one and junk it. There are plenty of crap cabs out there to convert.

We need to start putting people in concentration camps and gassing them if they make Mame cabs out of classics.

Finally someone thinks the same as me !!!

The hobby is not gonna end . All of this parting games is just gonna drive the prices of games up cause there will be less available . Then when parts and games get scarce the prices will go up and then people will respect the games and parts more . So tossing games in the dumpster sucks but in the end its just gonna make the other games more collectible , rare and worth more money .

I guess I am guilty of both destroying and preserving cabs. I DO try to preserve... and I've yet to simple part out a cab for the sake of parting it out... but I HAVE ... dare I say it... killed a semi-working cab to make a multi. It was one of my first projects and to this day I don't regret it. Why? Because I play the cab ALL the time. My DDK+ was a working DKJr... the monitor was shot, but the game played. I gutted it and JAMMAtized it. What can I say... I was a newb. Oh well. Life goes on.

Your analogy is flawed. Let me help:

The person you get the body part from is beyond repair and dead. In this case, parting the body out is acceptable.

Now, if you kill a perfectly healthy person to get the body part you need, then it is wrong and unacceptable.

So, taking parts from a clearly dead, unsalvageable game is OK. Taking parts from a salvageable classic that can be restored or is fully working is not OK.

Half the folks complaining about MAME are the exact same guys that'll throw a multiboard into a machine without blinking... you guys do understand how those multiboard games work, right?

If preservation is the key word, I guess it depends on what you actually feel is important to preserve.

For example, I stripped my Tron to the wood, repainted it entirely, refinished the coin door, rebuilt the chassis, and replaced the art and plastic with reproduction pieces. From a museum point of view, what I've done is a travesty, as any historical significance of the cabinet has been destroyed... but I don't care about that, I restore for the game, the feelings invoked in the player, the nostalgia... as far as my personal collection is concerned, I don't give a shit if it's original.

Is it the game, or the shell that holds the game?

What is the mission or purpose of the KOLV forums?

It's all still a big secret but 2012 will reveal more.
Just make sure you own a Gals Panic board and if you don't then don't worrie as sooner or later you will end up owning one because there is NO escape.

Anyway the Gals Panic Board will be the main key to the events that will take place in 2012.
instructions on how to really use the Gals Panic board will be posted on KLOV by the other side.

More info i just can't give for now.
