What is the excuse "Not in this Economy" when buying/selling a game?

Why is it that people use this excuse commonly?
Is it really that bad?
Does no one have spendable, disposible income?

Or is this just a saying that people like to say?

Explain this to me?

Many people bought games when the prices were extremely inflated and now they don't want to sell them at a loss. They are hoping that the inflated prices will return before they sell.

Really? Is this a reason for slamming someone else's pricing?

A good example - read a post on here about console games. I know nothing about them. People are stating that they're asking too much for it.

Is this a jealousy thing?
A keyboard commando?

Of course, the one that had me ask the question...

I had a kit priced at what I would sell it for.

In another thread, someone posted regarding the price of the other kit. The other kit sold weeks ago...yet, all they can remember that "in this economy" the kit is priced too high.

They were wrong.

Even to those who question what things are worth...is it the economy?

Yes it is really that bad i just sold a DE Hook for 845.00. I bought the machine for 1400.00.I was hoping for at least 1100.00 but could'nt get it and it's in very good shape.Money is very tight

What hole do you live in? You must be drinking the obama koolaid

Yeah, it's a strange time for games. Definitely a buyer's market.

When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought of the guy on Phoenix CL who's been trying to sell his 720 machine for $500. That's a great price for that game, and he's been trying to unload it for months with no luck (of course, I haven't seen the game for myself- so maybe it needs a lot of cosmetic work). I give the guy props for sticking to his guns with the price. I'm sure he'll get $500 eventually.

It also is a lame excuse for some people who have no job, no woman, and no life at all because they are "extreme message posters" who are on the computer all day and night when they could be out earning money! :)

Nah, it's not the economy, it's just excuses.
If the economy was better, then people would be saying things like, what do you think this is 1998 (or some other peak year for vid game sales)
Just a weak justification for tightwads to bag on peoples prices... I guarantee for every person here who was hit hard by the economy and can't afford to buy anything there is another person here who can easily afford it.
I'll never understand why people feel the need to negatively comment on something they have no interest in buying at the price listed? If it's priced too high the person won't sell it, and will either be forced to lower his price, or he'll be stuck with it.

It's a buyer's market for everything, not just video games.

The unemployment rate is still very high and a lot of people have had to take cuts to their income and/or gone for years with no raises.

I don't think the economy has anything to do with it.

I think the biggest problem is people hanging around message boards like this and for YEARS hearing "I have 100 games, and have never spent more than $100 on one of them", "I just got 4 free pinball machines", "I just got a working Major Havoc for $250, and a Quantum for $300" all the time. If I had a dollar for every time someone posted a "SCORE" thread and talked about getting a $50 PacMan, I would be able to buy the OPs SW kit in the FS section.

They see all of those, and don't want to spend the $, period.

You mean, sort of like when one member suggests that a nearly $3000 price tag for Demolition Derby is a little high, and another memeber, who's obsessed with reverse price-policing and has a $$$ avatar, swoops into said thread and says, "Oooo, I can't wait to see the seller get mad about what you said about his game - he restored it, therefore it's worth a fortune"?

That sort of keyboard commando? ;)

You could say that about any hobby. The internet has changed the landscape for a lot of collectibles.

What's missing from the market is the casual buyer, who is looking to own 1 or 2 games, and who is willing to pay retail or somthing more than $100 per game. The average person has no clue KLOV exists.

Yeah, I love that game...

Totally inaccurate IMO. I don't want to go down the 'woe is me' path of what has happened to me and my career in the past 2 years, but I will definitely agree money is tight with alot of folks right now.

Totally inaccurate? You're full of shit if you think people don't have that mentality. Either that, or you don't look at 90% of the FS ads around here. People will post something FS, and will get multiple "well, this sold at (insert much lower price) last week" or, "good thing I picked mine up from 100x less than that" responses. People will see those responses, and think to themselves "well, I'll wait to find a cheaper one".

Oh I won't say that there aren't people here on this site that aren't like that- you are correct in that respect. My response is in regard to the "big picture" of the economy where people simply aren't buying games period (or much of anything for that matter), or where sellers aren't making the profits they are looking to hit.

A huge chunk of NJ police just got laid off (Happy Holidays :( ), and at my employer a note just went out this week offering potential retirees an 'early out' option. It hasn't been offered since 1996 when they last had trouble balancing the budget. Things really are bad overall.

Yeah, that blows :(
