What is the est way to repair damaged cabinet sides?

Okay I missed a B in the title Post I am looking for the Best way to repair the sides of an arcade cabinet.

I have a Police trainer I am trying to clean up to sell and it has some dings in the sides of the cabinet.
I believe it is white melamine not just a paint that the dings are on.

Is it best just to fill the section with wood putty then repaint each section?
Will wood putty and paint even stick?

Should I look for something special? I want to try to keep the cost as inexpensive as possible and as little work as possible (I don't want to take apart and repaint the whole machine since I am selling it)

Thanks for taking the time to read and give me any tips.

Use Bondo instead of wood putty. Bondo = no shrinkage, and it paints just fine. You can get it at auto parts stores or Home Depot.

grind or scrape out the paint in the bad spots then use body filler. If you go to oreileys etc you cab get some professional grade stuff for the same price youd spend on krap"bondo" brand filler... scraping or grinding will give the filler something better to grab onto as it doesent stick to paint too well.

the good stuff sands easier vs regular bondo brand bondo is all. try it, youll like it.
